Caution: Rant Tipping

Why does everyone think they deserve a tip these days? So, I got ticked off when the cashier at the local convenience store has a tip jar out...for what? Running the cash register? It isn't like he pumps your gas or offers you coffee or something. I didn't say anything but next time I go in there I am going to ask what he is getting a tip for. I don't care if it is rude or not. Tipping is out of control here in the US. Is it where you are located as well?

I get tired of the tip jars too. I've started going up to the counter, reading the sign, paying for whatever, and reaching in the tip jar and taking a tip. When they ask why I did that, I respond "I did all the work getting whatever, you just cashed me out. Why should I give you money for running a cash register???" They shut up fast and I leave with a quarter off my bill.

@TheHorse I haven't said anything, but I sure might next time. If they don't want to hear anything don't put a tip jar out for running the cash register..

Yep, I mean if he actually did something for me, that would be another matter.

Everybody thinks they deserve a tip these days even in states where the minimum wage is already fairly high.

@snowy22315 My band sometimes puts out a tip jar. When I see a tip jar, I often ignore it. At the Mexican place, I leave a dollar tip when they cook up some peppers for me to go with my burrito.

Pizza places and ice cream places all have tip jars makes no sense to me. A cashier at a grocery store is that what you mean? Crazy he has a tip jar if that’s what you meant.

@snowy22315 I thought that was more what you meant. So weird! Tips are not necessary for that!

It is a conveience store. The guy does nothing but run the register and turn on the pumps if need be.

I do tip the salespersons and the delivery boys. The conditions are different. Here, the shop is such that these kids have to climb stairs several times each day. They still smile and do their job. It makes me feel sorry for them, so I tip them.

Delivery people here like for food orders customarily get tipped but they are providing a service.

@vandana7 There certainly are many situations where tipping is warranted.

@snowy22315 Theirs is a risky job. But the salespersons have it tough because half the stuff is upstairs. So they have to go up and down and up and down and up and down. :)

I'm thankful we don't share the same tip culture. I also don't like how VAT works there, it looks like I'd have to walk around with a calculator to know how much I'm really going to pay beforehand. No cashier would pack your bags here though, so it'd sort of make sense for me to pay a tip for such service if I let it happen, and if the cashier did a good job... of course. Otherwise, I usually pay a smile with a smile, a greeting with a greeting and a thank you with a thank you too and none dares complaining.

Tipping isn't common at all here. There are tip jars in some eating places but that's about all. We're always a bit at odds in Ireland, worrying about how much we're supposed to tip.

@snowy22315 The common saying here is 'I'll give you a tip. Be kind to your mother!'

We pay at the pump. It is not asking for a tip yet.

You weren't able to use your card at the pump or I would not have gone in.

It is here. Even the pizza places have a tip jar. They get paid minuend wage why do they need a tip on top of that.

Here's a hint if you want more money, get another job...or one that pays better! We aren't here to subsidize you.

I totally agree. Last summer when Tammy and I went to lunch in Charleston, we stopped at a little grill, ordered at the counter and was suggested a tip while we were paying. I didn't like it and gave a small tip, but didn't realize that we not only paid at the counter, we picked up our food at the counter, and cleaned up our table. What in the world were we tipping for, much like your experience at the convenience store. I certainly won't fall for it again. I think it's a good idea for you to ask that clerk what he/she did to deserve a tip.

I will if I see it in the store again. Their pumps don,'t even work half the time or I wouldn't have to go in the store in the first place.

In my opinion, tipping happens because employers don't pay enough. Minimum wage is not a living wage today.

@JamesHxstatic They shouldn't even have it there. Obviously, you don't need to tip if you don't want to.

It isn't up to the customer to make up the difference though.Except for like those in restaurants, hair salons etc. ICashiers who are doing nothing for a customer should not expect a tip!

@snowy22315 Just because it's there does not require you to tip, I don't tip for cashiers either.

I agree with you. He shouldn't have a tip jar by the register. It seems tipping is included in the check now. Ridiculous, especially when you don't always get good service.

My neighbor went to Subway, and went inside to order. She said at the check-out, when she used her debit card, there was a place to add the tip. For a fast food sandwich?? And for 2 subs, it was $25.00 For 2 sadwiches? Granted, they are fairly big but this is ridiculous. I feel like everyone has their hand out, everywhere I go. Maybe we should start a new trend, Snowy. Go into a business or restaurant. Make a purchase. And then say, I need xx number of dollars for a tip, because I graced you with my presence! I spent money, now I want some money! It's all way out of hand.

Yeah, Subway has had that tip thing for awhile. Better for a sandwich maker than someone who's sole duty is to run the register though..Argggh!

Our post office has a "tipping jar", the money collected goes to the charities. Often people pay cash at the post office and they do not want to keep in their pockets the 2 or 5 cents they receive back.

Tips are given in India too but if they force we are rude. I give tips to my cooking gas delivery boy as he cycles a long way to my house.

I've always had a problem with tipping. I'm not cheap...I just don't think tips are warranted in a lot of cases. Have a good week.

Tipping culture here is not like yours. We don't have the compulsion to tip nor do they ask for it. But one can always do it if they are happy with the service and wish to do so.
