Is pirates are really good?

Ok, we have seen the movies, where we only see pirates especially jack sparrow as a hero, but do/did they are really good or just unlike in the movies, they are cruel/hateful?

RyanRay What was telling in a movie is definitaly different from real world.In fact pirates are killers and robbers.
