I always read "on the farm" in English articles, but can "in the farm" possibly be used? Here is a sentence from Silent Spring.

Just an Ordinary Owl? You are correct in saying that "one" is a pronoun which replaces "a farm" in the sentence and "in which" is also a relative pronoun which refers to 'a farm'.
Your question is very reasonable but the answer is quite complex.
First of all, the word 'farm' (as...

Hi! What do the following two sentences (from In My Day) mean?

Just an Ordinary Owl? 1) "It was an awkward question with which to be awakened."
The verb - "to be awakened" - is in the passive infinitive. There is no subject (there is no specific person who is awakened ... it is simply a generality). The thing that does the awakening (or,...

Just an Ordinary Owl? It's also worth noting that, when the sentence begins with the because/since/as clause, there will almost invariably be a comma before the 'result' clause.
When the sentence puts the 'result' before the 'reason', it does not need a comma when 'because' is...

Just an Ordinary Owl? It is to be hoped that Rachel Carson would go on to explain just how the character of the power has changed during the past quarter century. In fact, she does in the following sentences (which are just the beginning of her argument):

Just an Ordinary Owl? The first sentence is a simple, factual statement. The second is a conditional sentence (= "[If it is] given time, ... life adjusts") the third - disguised by a conjunction - is another statement: "a balance has been reached".
There is no suggestion of or...
