Need a hand here, what does it mean "A is three times bigger than B"?

I've always been told that, "A is three times bigger than B" means "A=B*(3+1)", that is "A= B*4". While recently someone said that "A is three times bigger than B" means "A=B*3". What in fact does it mean? What do native speakers...

aainorx So "A is three times bigger than B"="A is three times as big as B"? We were just told that the "bigger" one is bigger...Thanks a lot~
