Whats the difference between a friend and an associate?

I've said the phrase, we're not friends, just asociates when sometimes it turns out the associates are more loyal than your "true friends". How do you define friend and associate?

callia50 In my eyes there is definitely a deeper or closer more personal level of relationship when you can consider a person a friend vs an associate. I have had more associates be more loyal but I think that all comes back to the less personal relationship you have...

callia50 I was six when I lost my first tooth. My oldest will be seven in September and she shows no signs of losing any of those pearlies! But that's right, every child is different. Some lose early and some don't start until way later.
