Kythe42 I would just confess. I'd apologize and explain that I misplaced the item. I'd say that I'm looking for it as hard as I can, and if I can't find it after a week then I would pay to replace it.

Feggish I'll just tell him/her that I lost it and pay him/her back the money so they could buy another one. It's my fault that I lost it, I should be responsible for bringing it back to the person.
