Installing Software onto Linux

I recently installed Ubuntu onto a spare computer, Using it seams easy enough. But what I can't figure out is how to install downloaded software onto Linux. When I extract the downloaded .tar file i get a bunch of files and...

nfsfan i had the same problem. u can go to ubuntuforums.org and ask from there. on the contrary i suggest u try opensuse as there are rpms available on its sister sites and are quite easy to install.

the new release of Ubuntu is this... now ubuntu becoming user friendly than windows by this version.. do u hav Ubuntu 7.04

nfsfan well i havent really tried but i am raring to go at it in a couple of months , and ubuntu or for that matter any linux distro becoming friendlier than windows, i quite disagree as many people just are complete noobs in os's and all they know is how windows xp...

i am feed up with windows and goin to shift linux.. do u know any mp3 players for linux...

nfsfan well there r many.vlc player works good, but for many amorak and mplayer is also good.i also suggest u try opensuse 10.3 because i found it a much easier to use solution.and unlike the other linux distros, it had mp3 support(real player) as well.
