I was wondering if anyone has bamboo in their yard? I live in Ohio and I do know there are some cold types of bamboo. The reason I would like to plant it is to block out my neighbors. Any thoughts or tips?

When I lived in NJ (which I would say is pretty close to Ohio in climate, as I lived there as well) we had bamboo in our yard and it spread like crazy! It was wonderful, healthy, beautiful but can get out of control very easy. If you grow it, make sure you keep an eye on it. It does spread and you'll wind up with it in places where you didn't want it. I think we only planted one plant (I don't even remember) and never did anything to it (water, fertilizer)...it just became a little forest!

Oh cool. NOw if you keep and eye on it and trim any that you do not want can you keep it under control? I have read about using barriors to keep it where you want it did you try this? (waving like a mad woman oh oh come back talk to me so more) I'm harmless really!

I'll have to ask my parents as I don't remember if we even planted the bamboo or if it came from a neighbor's yard or what. If we did plant it, I know it would have been in our fountain area, not in the yard, but that's where it wound up. We never did anything to it as we never intended to have it in the yard, but it was nice and along the sides of the yard so we left it alone. I just looked in my gardening book (for Florida but I figure the principles are the same) and it says bamboo is a grass (thus the spreading quality!) and you can contain it by cutting the runners that you see growing where you don't want it to be or you can build an underground 'wall' to keep it in place.

I'm thinking maybe if I put it in a big pot. We were at the Nashville Zoo and they had a ton of it. I just loved the way it sounded when the wind blew it was very soothing, and I just think it is very pretty! Thanks for your help.

Woo Hoo Bamboo!! LOL Be very careful about your decision to use the stuff. My friend bought a house that had it on the property and it srpouts up everywhere. The roots grow out underground sometimes for feet and then growth will pop up. Cutting the root of bamboo only stimulates more growth so the only way to get rid of it entirely is to backhoe her entire back yard!!! What about a Fence, Arborvities, or pine trees instead?

No, I don't have any bamboo in my yard, but I just live in Virginia and I do know of a lot of people who do have bamboo in their yard here. I know that you can buy some that will survive in the cold, I don't think that Ohio is probably much colder than it is here. I think that they just require a lot of water.
