My boyfriend wouldn't let me get a ferret, he said they were very mean. I don't agree. I have never had one or known anyone who has one but when I played with them at the pet store they were so charming and sweet.
They were very sweet, inquisitive and playful. I was never bitten. The reminded me of a dog because the were so happy go lucky and playful, but yet they were like a cat, very sweet and seemed smart. I was so bummed out when he said I couldn't have one.

My 2 ferrets are FAIRLY nice. They're somewhat smart, more of a sneaky, sly smart but yea. They will occasionally bite, but I mean that all depends on the ferret I guess. They do stink a fair bit, but you get used to it after awhile. And if they're like mine, they POOP EVERYWHERE!

My mother got bitten by a ferret when we were in the pet store once. When we had the computer guy out, he says it just depends on the ferret itself whether it will bite or not.

Ferrets have their own temperment like any animal. Some may be mean, but generaly ferrets are just as you described, happy go lucky, playful and sweet. We have 2 ferrets and 2 children ages 2 and 6 and our ferrets have never once bitten the kids or us. I love my ferrets, they are fun to have around, very smart and sneeky at times lol.
If I were you and you were really interested in getting a ferret - start doing your homework, and getting information and maybe have your boyfriend do the same with you. =)

A friend of mine had a ferret for awhile and only said they are mean when they no longer trust the scent of the person (other than hand that feeds-owner) coming between the relationship of it and the shelter-provider, food-giver, love-renderer etc.
They are more temperamental but posess amazing ability to getting what they want no matter what it takes to get it !

Out of the 6 ferrets we have, only one was slightly mean.. and that was because she was abused (and subsequently went deaf) when she was small. We kept her seperate from the group for the longest, but about 2 years ago we put her in with the population and she has smoothed over nicely. She doesnt bite anymore.

They're just like any other animal, you may find a mean one here and there. I've only seen one mean ferret before. Was at a pet store, and they had all their animals out in displays where people can interact with them. Obviously this one was taunted really bad. He actually drew blood on my hand, was just plain viscious. I wish pet stores would stop doing that. That's their lazy way of "interacting" with the animals, but it only spreads diseases amongst them(birds, dogs, cats, hamsters, etc) and in some cases like that one I dealt with, makes them mean.
I have 3 ferrets, they've never bitten-just when they were babies the typical playing nips, never drew blood. They don't bite me at all now that they're older. Just sweet little devils :) And yes, they do have an odor to their poop, but you clean the cage/litter box frequently and that takes care of that :)

A few years back I had a friend who had 3 ferrets as pets and they were really cool. You are right about the cat reference, they play just like them. One of his would chase after you when you were walking and paw at your feet...very cute. The only real drawback that I saw was that they stink pretty badly.

I think that ferrets are very cool animals. I have had 6 of them at different times in the past. They range in personalities, just like any other animal. I have had some that are so laid back that you could do just about anything to them and they never get aggressive. Then, I had a couple of males that were very aggressive, but I treated them like I would a dog or cat and started telling them "no!". This seemed to work, they learned not to be aggressive, just like a dog or cat can learn tricks and what rules to go by.
I personally think they are very great pets to have, but they do stink. Even if they are descented, they still have an odor about them. The males seem to be worse than the females in this department. But, all of my were litter trained, and I truly enjoyed having them.
I have kept them in the house and outside. They enjoy playing with toys just like a cat or dog. There are all sorts of items that you can purchase to put in their cages. I had hammocks for some of them. One of my males, Scooter, loved shoe boxes for his bed. Pine bedding is what I used and you have to really keep up with the upkeep of their cage and bathing them. This helps to cut down on some of the smell.
