At our house, we don't put up our Christmas tree until Thanksgiving is over, and just before December begins. One tradition that our families done since my girls were little, was to hide 3 candy canes under the angel topper's skirt. The canes that were on the tree for decoration were allowed to be passed out for guests who wanted one, or as a treat here and there for themselves, but under no circumstances were they to take the ones that were hidden. These were saved for whoever was going to help me take the tree down. Best part was that they ALWAYS helped dismantle the tree; the last candy canes were an incentive. Even though my girls are grown & flown, we still do this...now it's the grandkids who anxiously await the last coveted hidden candy canes.

It was my own idea for the tradition because everybody wanted to help put the tree up, but nobody wanted to help take it down. Worked like a charm! Sometimes I'd stick extra 'stuff' way back in the branches for them to find, too. Lol, they wouldn't stop and kept looking 'just in case there was more' until next thing you know, the tree was done and all boxed up.

I used to have the same problem with the cats in the Christmas tree. Many years ago, after the tree got knocked down for the zillionth time, I took the pepper shaker off the kitchen table and shook pepper over the bottom branches and ornaments. You can't tell it's on there, but the cats/dog can. If they bat an ornament, a little pepper comes off and they don't like it. I've been doing this for years, it doesn't hurt the animal. Now my cats lay peacefully at the bottom of the tree skirt and don't bother with trying to crawl the tree, or bat ornaments either. Works for me anyways...

Oh, tell me about it! LOL. Some years I do the lil tree on a table also. (I have 17 cats). Last year, though, I confined the cats that refused to leave the tree alone to other parts of the house and decorated my whole living area --including a tree. It was a hassle keeping the cats locked away though. I may just buy a picture of a tree and hang it on the wall this year. LOL

We always put the tree up the day after thanksgiving. My mom always brought the christmas decorations up from the cellar ON thanksgiving and started to decorate. Drove my dad nuts ;)
We always had real trees. The past few years though, since two of her kids are adult now, and the other is close to an adult my mom has just gotten fake trees. I myself have had fake trees the past five or six years. This year we are going for a real one :)

Well if you consider momma(me) doing all the work a tradition, then yea. Other than that we just wait until after thanksgiving is over to put it up. We try to take it down as soon as we can after x-mas. I am really nervous about it this year bc our daughter is big enough to start taking the decorations off of the tree.

We usually put up the Christmas tree a few day after Thanksgiving. Usually the youngest person puts the star on the tree at the end. One tradition we do every year is that on Thanksgiving we pick names. That way we all get a gift from Santa.

When the kids were home we always tried to put the tree up the first Sunday after Thanksgiving. While my husband assembled the tree and tried to get the lights fixed the kids and I made, decorated, and baked cookies. (Have you ever noticed that the lights you took off last year worked but when you put them on this year they don't work?) Now the kids are all grown and it depends on when we can get together sometimes after Thanksgiving dinner we make the cookies while the tree is being assembled. We also make chocolate candies. It keeps the kids out of the way while the tree is being assembled and a lot less stress on everyone!

My daughter must have got tired of the light hassel last year she bought us all new lights. I have three girls one lives across the road from me and the other two live about 5 miles away. My son lives in another state (about a 2 hour drive so not bad) and we don't get to see them much. But we all get together for holidays and other times too. When we put up the tree now they come in with all there candy indgrediants and we spend the day baking and making stuff. Seems everyone has a favorite and then we mix and share to take home.

i'm a little bit confused as to how we should start our christmas tree tradition lol...my MIL puts hers up right after thanksgiving, whereas my mom would put ours up about a week before christmas!

It looks like you get a chance to start a wonderful new tradition just for yourselves! Your own time to put it up, your own tradition for decorating and how you decorate it, what you do surrounding the decorating or it, etc. It sounds really exciting to me!

Wow! How much earlier? I'm still trying to decide if I'm even going to put one up or not. I keep saying I'm not going to bother every year, but then my grandkids are so disappointed that I end up going all out and decorating both inside and out. LOL

LOL. I actually had 3 Christmas trees myself last year. One full-sized tree and two small ones. That was just the inside trees! The outside of my house looked like a winter wonderland. This from a Christmas scrooge who wasn't gonna decorate. haha!!

Isn't it amazing how those grandkids can change our minds for us? I was going to give up our tree because of the kids all being gone but they didn't like that idea at all and so we have taken over to all getting together to put up the tree and 3 years ago bought a new, bigger one!!! Now the old one that we used for 25+ years is at church for my children's Bible class and we decorate it on the first Wed in Dec. somehow I have gone from 1 tree to 2 and now even have one that I set up in the picture window of our walkin basement!

Since we travel across many states for Thanksgiving, our tree goes up the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Once we get back, our calendar is so full that we just end up too busy. When we used to live closer to family, it always went up on Saturday after Thanksgiving...we like time to enjoy the tree. When the boys were younger, everyone helped with the tree and the youngest put the angel on top. Now, all our grown so usually my husband and I end up doing the tree.

Wow! Sounds like me! My boys are still at home (college) and it is my favorite holiday so I find it a chore to put up but want it up so I have time to enjoy it BUT I hate taking it down! Why is is always more work taking it down than it is putting it up? Or, does it just seem that way because we want the work over and done with? I am trying to talk hubby into buying one that opens like an umbrella and has lights already on it as I think it will make it a much easier chore. Maybe one of these years, I will convince him...I guess ours looks too good yet. LOL

The only thing I remember from way back is that my mom would always have something we made up on the tree. This was either a decor, a card or whatever can be hung on the tree. Now, this tradition is kept with my nephews who are also making their own Christmas stuff.
And we do put up the Christmas tree on December 1 because things really turn mayhem in the house after that.
