My boyfriend's birthday is on Saturday. He mentioned that he likes red velvet cake. Instead of buying one I would like to make it for him. Does anyone have any tried and true recipes for red velvet cake that they would be willing to share? Many thanks in advance!

Sounds wonderful!
I will have to try this one out sometime. The one I tried to make was a flop. The recipe I got from the person was not right and the cake didn't turn out well at all. I bought one last minute. Such a shame. And the amount of money I spent on all those ingredients. Ah well. But your's sounds easy and tasty. Thanks!

This is the recipe my family uses every holiday season. It is rich and delicious. I hope your boyfriend enjoys it very much and enjoys his day as well.
RED VELVET CAKE
1/2 cup shortening
1 1.2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp. cocoa
4 tbsp. red coloring
1 tsp. salt
2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. vinegar
Cream shortening thoroughly. Add sugar gradually, and blend until
light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each
addition. Make paste of cocoa, food coloring and salt. Add to
shortening mixture. Mix vanilla with buttermilk. Dissolve baking
soda in vinegar, fold into buttermilk mixture. Add flour and
buttermilk mixture alternately to shortening mixture, beginning
and ending with flour. Blend thoroughly until batter is smooth Do
not over beat. Pour into well greased and floured 13 x 9 inch pan.
Bake at 350 F. for 35 to 40 minutes or until done when tested with
a toothpick. Cool and frost.
Rich frosting
3 to 5 tbsp. flour
1 cup milk
1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup icing sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Make paste of flour and part of milk. Add remainder of milk gradually,
and mix until smooth. Cook over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes or

not melt when added). Cream butter with sugar, adding vanilla and
blending until smooth. Add to cooled flour mixture 1 tsp. at a
time, beating until fluffy.

Sounds great. Now would it be possible to make it in two 9inch cake pans? And what about having a cream cheese frosting? No problem right? Thank you so much!

I know I might look like an ignorant person but I have to admit that after more than three decades living in this planet, it's only now that I've heard about this type of cake. Stupid, ain't I?
Anyway, I've always been fascinated by cakes. And I'm a sweet tooth by the way, from cakes to pastries, brownies, ice cream, ice cream cake, you name it! Unfortunately, I haven't tried baking an actual cake even once. My reason then was because we don't have an oven in the household. But now, I can't use that same reason anymore; because my parents gave me and my husband an oven as wedding gift more than five years ago. However, we decided to leave it in my parents' house in the province for the time being. Until now, we haven't used it because we are still paying off most of our outstanding monetary obligations where almost all of my monthly salary goes. Hopefully, after paying them all off, we'll be able to save for our own house and lot.
But if I have some cake recipes, traditional or otherwise, including internet sites covering this topic, I'd be more than willing to share them with you.
Happy baking, anyway and good luck. Regards.
