People struggle everyday with habits they wish to stop. Habits such as biting one's fingernails, smoking, drinking to excess, eating too much and many more. Have you been successful in stopping a habit? If so, share with your myLot friends what you did to be successful!

Why on earth would anyone want to stop eating Ice Cream? It is a World Wide Tradition and one of the joys of living. However, if one were to cut down on the amount of Ice Cream that he/she eats that would be a horse of another color. That I wouldn't have any problem of doing.

I wish that I could quit smoking but it has not happened. I wish that I could not bite my finger nails but that has not happened. I don't get fake nails for the fact that I make candles and it can get in the way. I did quit eating junk food . I am on the South Beach Diet and 3rd day in. No JUNK FOOD! WOOHOO. I have lost 5 lbs and very pleased with it. I can still eat healthy but without the sweets. My husband has lost 9 lbs. How come they lose quicker than women??? NO FAIR!! Think I will start a discussion on that. LOL Have a great day.

I stopped biting my fingernails (my worst habit) for a couple of months but really wasn't very good at looking after them so I was constantly nicking myself because they were so long. My face ended up looking like Edward Scissorhands. Right now I am trying to quit drinking soda. I am about 5 days in and struggling rally badly....it's making me drink lots of water though which is good.

Hi crazynurse.
I quit smoking in March, and I am still smoke free. It has been hard as ciggies are very addictive. It seems though that the times I do crave is when I am really stressed or upset about something.

I was able to break my bad habit of smoking. While I admit it wasn't easy I was able to quit cold turkey. I am now addicted to peppomint lifesavers however. So I guess I just swithced one bad habit for another but atleast my lifesavers are better for me.

Well there is one thing that I love and that is soda and coffee, but I just recently found out that both of them are putting an effect on my heart and I had to let them go. As much as I love them I love my life alot more.

I don't think I have any bad habits that I want to get rid of. I think I know how to stay away from them and not get hooked like some people out there.

I have a bad habit of twirling my hair. My friends at work are very helpful in letting me know when I am doing it. I keep making snarls underneath my hair in the back. The fact that I am a nurse and have germs and who knows what else on my hands is a poweful motivator to stop touching my hair. My hair touches my face when I sleep and I don't need those germs in my eyes, nose or mouth. It also looks unprofessional to be twirling my hair.
I am currently trying to keep my hair in a ponytail so that there is nothing to twirl.
My mom told me that I used to twirl my hair when I was going to sleep in my crib. It must be a self-comforting thing.

Crazynurse,
This is a depressing subject to ask us folks to think about. LOL I do remember one that I have managed to quit, and no it is not biting my fingernails. I cant seem to quit that one. LOL
I used to twirl my hair with my fingers till my hair would break. Have you ever heard of such a stupid thing to do. I would do it and not even realize I was doing it. Finally one day , my husband told me that he was going to start smacking my hands every time he saw me doing it. After gettting smacked on the hands like a toddler does, I learned to quit. LOL

My daughter who is now 28 had a bad habit since she was 11. Her habit was tearing up sponge. She did it when she got nervous. After marriage and 3 kids you think she would stop but she didnt until just recently. We got her to start a hobbie that will need her to use her hands . Makig jewelery. It has worked so far. Knock on wood.

i used to nail bite since i was in gradeschool. i brought up that bad habit of mine until i was in college. i was in my 2nd year of college when my psychologist professor mentioned that nail biting can consider a person an attention seeker. and gosh, just by hearing it, i felt so bad. i am not an attention seeker but people who might see me doing it will think that i am then.
so, next day, i went to school, covered all my fingertips with band-aids. people in school were staring at me and i never cared. i did this for a straight week. and after that, i never bit my nails again.

I think most habits are reinforced because they are done without thinking. Many times, we are not aware of what we are doing, and we continue to just do it from a level of unconsciuosness. Becoming aware of a habit is the first step to ending it. Deciding to think of alternative actions to replace the habit might be the next step. You have to see yourself replacing your current habits with newer habits that might be more constructive.
Biting one's fingernails might not be too destructive, whereas drinking and smoking will take a toll on your life in the longer run if not sooner. I can't think of any current bad habits that need to change, other than how I think about myself and the world. It takes persistant work to overcome destructive habits...but the results can be earthshattering. And also provide a boostto your self esteem and confidence.

I used to bite my nails so short that they would really hurt and bleed. I did that ever since I was a little kid. Then like 4 years ago, I made up my mind to grow my nails so they would look nice. I had tried to do that before but always went back to biting. The last time though I haven't gone back to it. I just stopped and it stayed that way. I don't know how I did it, I just did.

I stopped smoking after the birth of my first daughter, i didnt find it too difficult to stop as i dont believe i was ever a 'true' smoker! I used to hate it and dont even know why i would have one!
However the hardest thing i ever had to stop, was eating excessively, i found i had a problem with greed, and it wasnt just one bag or crisps, or one chocolate bar, its was 2, 3 or maybe 4!
I took a hold one day and realised i needed to stop or id make myself ill, i always wanted to look nice for my 21st birthday! So i started counting calories, 1200 per day, and started exercising.
In no time i found id lost a lot of weight, and better still, its stayed off because i did it the correct way!
Now i feel much healthier!
I do sympathise with people who struggle to give things up, the food was the hardest one for me, and still give in sometimes even now, but i try to stick to 80% good, and then if i lapse i allow 20% of the time for treats!
Good luck!
