Should art make people think?

As an artist I used to paint with no particular outcome other than creating art in mind. I did not wonder what the reponse of others may be or truely whether my art had a particular meaning.
Lately I have been thinking more deeply on this subject and have decided that I may need to try and create art that makes people question things and think more deeply themselves...any um thoughts on this!

i believe people buy art for many different reasons. alot of people buy something that they just like to look at, where others buy because it reminds them of something, or they just collect. i think you should paint what you love most. that is why you love it right.

For me art is the only way to express my complicated thoughts and worldviews. So, of course, I need to make people think for that. But actually, the supposed to have no sense art, is it really no sense? or hidden feeling that wakes up a strange sense inside?

If you think so, actually it always have some kind of sense, althought sometimes it is a deep personal sense that many people can't understand. I think that doesn't mind, sometimes art is just for a few people, or also other people can admire it superfically and this deep feelings can be suggested althought not understood completely.

I think art gives a focus point for people to think, imagine and create. Quality art allows our thoughts to roam. We gain fresh perspectives which may have bearings on our lives.

Well I guess I have created art as long as I remember, I guess it just started with the love of creating and I just made something that I thought was aesthetically pleasing. However since attending art college that has changed. The tutors are always talking about the concept and why we are doing every single thing in the creative process to create this piece of art. We have to develop a concept and then creatively explore ways of conveying this through the formal elements. I guess art should deffinately make people think, people should be able to relate with your piece and not just be like "that is a pretty piece".

I have always felt called to art and wonder your question often. The most enjoyable type of art is the kind you mention as, "creating art in mind...with no particular outcome". When I try to create art that will make people think, I'm usually not happy with it. Art is really difficult though, because art with no intent that makes people think, is the real winner. Art comes from an unkown place, it is the artists job to fish the image/object/idea out and present it. If it is done right people will feel it, and the wheels in the mind will start to turn.

I think it depends on the artist and collector. That's what great about all the different types of art, there's something that everyone will like. For me, I like to enjoy things that I like looking at. So, I create things I enjoy and take pleasure in. And, when I look at art and photography, I like the ones that are visually pleasing to me personally. So, for me art is about expressing joy and beauty.

I think we are in the same boat. I don't really call myself an artist though. I'm just a web/graphic designer who love to draw sometimes. Usually I just draw something out of my mine. I believe there are a meaning in my drawing but I'm not sure others will see what I see.
