Give Depression a Swift Kick, Go Get Some Sun!

Winter months can wreak havoc on your physical and mental state. The lack of sunlight can often be the reason. These past few days I have been out in various places and have noticed how much more upbeat people seem to be. The sunny weather has brought many out of hibernation. I too have noticed my moods seem to be better. I have been spending some time in the warm sun. But, of course, watching how much sun you get is important too. As I am fair skinned I tend to burn easily. I do use sunblock, but only after I have been in the sun for about 15 minutes. The Sun Beckons....I am off for a little bit today to soak up the sun. Huggers to all.

When we were kids, we were always outside playing. We were never in the house watching TV as we had no tv. We were always happy and cheerful. This was the norm for everyone. Adults were outside when they were not at their place of employment, working in the garden or in the hay field. Back then you never heard of depression. But in todays society is it much more common. But then again our schedules are much more overloaded too. I love the sunshine. It is just a wonderful way that Heavenly Father gave us to be happy.

I was always outside too when I was a kid. The kids nowadays don't know what to do outside. My grandkids, neices, and nephews will tell me how bored they are. I tell them to go outside, they look at you like your nuts. Then they say there is nothing to do outside. I was never in the house as a kid.

My youngest grandkids are coming over tomorrow. They will love going outside in to play. They do not have a place to play where they live.

When I was a kid, I also played outside all the time! I always seemed to find something to do, and had brothers to play with sometimes. When we had nothing really to play with...we had to use our imaginations! :) We would be told....inside or outside! We always choose to stay outside and play until we where hot and faces red, or cold and toes frozen! LOL :)

I have always been told by doctors that being out in the sun is a good cure for depression. People do seem more cheerful by being outdoors and there is more to it than we know. Staying inside the house tends to make people feel depressed and not as lively. Being outdoors is very good for us, both mentally and physically. Here is a website that talks more about sunlight and how it affects people with depression. http://www.newstarget.com/001541.html

Thank you for the link. Many people don't realize the effect that sun deprivation can have on the body.

I agree with kgwat70. That's true, being out in the sun is good for depressed people. That would be a great help for them. I think I have to try that too. Thanks for the info. That is a good idea.

I love the springtime. After a long, cold, dreary, grey winter. The sun comes out, blue sky, warmer temps. Everyone is happy and smiling and also much friendlier. People are happy, birds are chirping, squirrels are busy, the birds are busy building their nest, the grass, trees, and flowers are even happy. Lets all enjoy this beautiful Saturday in the sunshine. For those whos weather is still yucky, I wish you all sunshine real soon.

When I am sitting outside I close my eyes and listen to the birds as they chirp. Wonderful sounds.

I understand what you mean! I tend to want to stay in bed, or cuddle by the warm fire when the winter months are here, or even when it is really cold outside! I would be one of those people that hibernate over the winter...and come out when the sun begins to melt away all of the snow. Although, every now in then, when there is a snow...I will be outside playing with everyone in it! :) Other than that, count me out!!! I cannot wait until the summer! I hate going to school and being cooped up inside in the cold air conditioning! I want to be outside in the warm sun. Soaking it all up before it turns cold in a blink of an eye! I want to be outside instead of inside working on homework, and a paper due Monday! :( Maybe I should take some time off from my work when it is sunny, so that I get a chance to warm my cold, hibernated body! LOL :)

Yes you are right that depression can kick in if you are not careful with what you do during the winter season. Where I live in Australia it is Autumn right now and we are heading for the winter season so I will still make sure on the days that are not too bad that I definately will be still getting out of the home, so that I do not get too depressed from the season. I am fair skinned as well and tend to burn if I get in too much sun. Huggers to you as well and enjoy your summer months ahead!!

Yeah this is part of the reason I get depressed but to much sun makes my body go stiff.

I have to Elude the Sun, Butterfly! I enjoy it from a window. Medicine that I take makes me very sun sensitive and when I do go out I wear long sleeves and a floppy hat. Even it it were not so; in order not to frighten small children with the baggy underarms, I would still have to cover them - and gracious knows, I'm not even going to begin to discuss the cellulite on the legs!~Donna

If I had to avoid the sun, my days would not be the same. But, you do what you have to do of course. Even if I were only sitting in the screen house with the shade overhead, being outdoors when the sun is shining is very therapeutic.

It is well known that lack of sun can effect people's well being. Even in sunny Australia, the winter months can cause depression in me. Years back, I made the point of going on a holiday in the far north in the middle of winter, so reboost my energy. I can't afford to travel that far now. These past two weeks the weather has been magnificant, a very warm Autumn, & I have been feeling great, with a lot more energy.

Have a great one lol. I think if the weather permits I am going to do the same tomorrow in my Sister's garden. I can't venture too far because I am so behind with my work and Mylotting that I have the chance while I haven't got so much manual work to do, to get on with some serious online business. I think though an hour in the garden soaking up some vitamin d will help. Thankyou fro reminding me..

Oh yes, yesterday was one of the handful of perfect weather days we get each year. Sunny, not too hot and not cold. It was PERFECT! My kids wanted to go swimming, but we ran aroumd and kicked the soccer ball instead and then cooked on the grill. The best thing about winter is that it really makes me appreciate Spring.....

There are a few things about winter that I enjoy, but they are few. Spring is probably the one season that brings out more joy in people. They anxiously await the sun and warmer weather.

We finally have some sun, and I've been out cutting grass and enjoying the warmer temps. It sure is a relief from the cold. It is a huge pick-me-up. I have to slather on the sunblock too. My skin can't take the sun, but I love when it's out.

I am great with fine warm weather, and my mood lifts and my energy level picks up and all is right with the world. Then let it get too hot, and I am back into hibernation. Let me hide away from the heat. I am afraid I had too much today, even with sun screen. LOL

I can slather on the sunscreen so thick that you can see it and I will still turn pink. But, that doesn't keep me from playing outside in the sun!

Oh gosh do I know this to be true. I am a born and bred California girl. I spent 4 miserable winters in Chicago and I am telling you, more than the ice, more than the snow, more than that miserable cut right through you wind it was the days and days of total Gloom. I about lost it. By February or March every year I had to come back home to California for a SUN-Fix. I perform much better when the sun is out and a breeze is in the air. I love to be outside working in the garden or just shilling on the deck. Too many cloudy days makes me a really nasty person. My Husband prays for sunshine regularly LOL.

How true this is--- I'm always more happy and awake when it's sunny out- Whether I'm outside enjoying it- or at work looking at it through the window- Sunshine brightens my mood! I was so sick of the snowy, rainy wintery blah days! It's been gorgeous out the last 3 days here in NY- I've been enjoying as much of it as I can outside- I'm also fair skinned- I burn regardless of sunblock -- but usually just once. I love the sun!

I can understand about the depression part it was pretty here today and it did help a little to get out instead of being cooped here especially when it rains but you can't change the weather so why not enjoy it while you can.
