There are people who are really afraid of needles. In fact in one of the shows which I frequently watch, a person is so afraid of needles that he'd freak out like a kid!
What about you?
Are you afraid of needles?
Personally, I am not afraid of needles and I guess that works well for me because the nurses wont find me a difficult patient to deal with. I also think I am quite lucky that I dont have such a fear of needles. LOL

i am a person who isn't scared of needles. big or small, it's okey for me. it's not that painful. even if a nurse extracts some amount of blood from me, i can even look at it without feeling scared.
there are people who are scared of needles. i know friends who are like that, too. and so, they find me brave since i am not scared of them. hehe.
happy myLotting vesuvius!

Belonephobia:fear of needles
Aichmophobia:fear of pointed objects
Algophobia:fear of pain
Trypanophobia:fear of injections
Let's get something straight here, if you have an extraordinary fear of needles, medical procedures, blood/injury, or pain, you are not a whimp, you are a 'special need' patient, your fear is not a character flaw, nor does it have anything whatsoever to do with lack of will power. You are a special-need patient. Don't forget it and don't let anyone else forget it.

Wow! Thank you for the terminology and some words to add to my "I R SMART" vocabulary list. lol. I would have to say that I have belonephobia. No other sharp objects scare me, injections don't scare me either, pain doesn't scare me, just those nasty needles! lol

Thanks for all those information asmurthy! I think you're right that nobody should consider them (people with any of those phobias you have given) funny or unusual guys.
But I would just want to know: Are you afraid of needles? Because that's what this discussion is about. I want to know how others feel about needles themselves.
Thanks for this response by the way.

No I am not afraid of needles. There are times when I was a kid my heart pounded like crazy when it's my turn to receive a vaccine shot but I just close my eyes and wait for it to be over.

Hi vesuvius. your question are you afraid of needles, well no Im not, Im quiet use to them, as I have regular blood tests... I think Im more afraid of who adminstrates the using of the needles, and why I say that,is because you can get the odd nurse out there, that thinks your arm or leg is the dart board and will just stick in without thinking about how the patient might feel.

It's great that you have regular blood tests! I guess more people should try doing that to prevent illnesses. Now, I think you're right. I believe the trauma really comes from the people that administers the procedure of injecting. There really are some nurses who seem to be tense when it comes to dealing with a syringe and that feeling makes them very unfit for the procedure - they make it hurtful at times.

HAHAHAHA. I am terrified of needles. From the age of 11 to about 15 I got my blood drawn at least once a month, sometimes more. Now it works out to be about 1 or 2 times a year. It was only in the last year or 2 that I can actually get my blood drawn with out crying and screaming. The doctors used to have to hold me down. Then I would cry and cry and cry. Then afterward I would feel all ashamed and guilty for acting so stupid because it really wasn't all that bad. Now I just whimper a little and try very hard not to squirm. lol. It's so difficult to deal with that I even have to look away from the TV if someone is getting a shot or anything like that and they show a needle. Blood is fine, guts are fine, but NO NEEDLES! lol

Well, at least you are starting to conquer your fear because you can already control yourself from crying. Congratulations for that!
I think having a fear of needles is very normal for many people but I believe it can be conquered once one realizes that it's not that bad at all though it's a little painful.

I'm a bit of a scaredy cat to be honest but funnily enough needles are one of the things that really don't bother me. I give blood regularly and have tons of tattoos (lots of needles involved there)...the only time I really don't like them is at the dentist but that is more from a fear of the dentists than being concerned about the needles.

Depending on which kind of needles. If it was just needles at the hospital then it is ok. But, if it is acupuncture needles being performed on you by an acupuncture student, then that is another story. I know because when I was a student at acupuncture school, we do student exchanges. It was scary for all for us.

Another funny thing. I'm the exact opposite. I have done acupuncture many times and really value the benefits as an alternative medicine. Then again, I have had my acupuncture done by a professional. Was acupuncture school as scary as it sounds? You said it was scary, but I would be just terrified. I can imagine just laying there whispering "oh please oh please oh please oh please." I went to massage school and there was nothing terrifying about those student exchanges! lol

Needles have never bothered me at all, I don't mind getting shots or giving them. When I was younger, I had to get two shots twice a week in both arms for allergies. I eventually grew out of my allergies so no more shots unless its just a regular flu shot or something like that. My husband can't stand them and he has to give himself shots, lol. Eventually, I will have to start vaccinating my dogs myself so I can't be afraid of needles.

I am not afraid of needles. Why? I know I won't die if I take a shot. It's for my own good.

A great straigh-forward answer! You're right, nobody will die with a single shot. However, I do understand that there are people who are traumatized even by just the sharp look of a needle - well, we've all got fears, it's just lucky for us that we're not afraid of needles because we might need it for medication someday.

Personally I don't really care for needles but I am not afraid of them. Now my daughter is terrified of them. Last year she had to get her blood taken and it took 45 minutes, we ended up having to hold her down, me and 3 nurses and of course she was screaming and crying and so I started to cry, it was awful. When we left the room someone in the waiting room asked if my daughter was ok, I said yes she just had blood work done and the lady said oh my, I thought she was really sick or hurt.

It seems your daughter didnt inherit your being not afraid of the needles. I have seen many people who have had the same experiences as your daughter and I know it must be really hard for them.
I just hope she could one day overcome this fear - conquering this phobia would work best for her.

Well no I am not afraid of needles. I am actually a nurse and it is difficult when someone brings a child in especially that is afraid of them. My kids are all OK with needles as I tell them the truth about why they have to have them and that seems to work.

i'm very afraid of needles. i remember being sick when i was to be confined for a day in the hospital. the nurse told my dad that i need to be fed with dextrose. the dextrose needle was horrible and i freaked out. it turned out that the nurse didn't forced me to it. and so i was just there, been checked-up. the doctor then, just prescribed some medicine for me.
