I would capture it. Put it into a pillow case and release it some place away from my home.
When you see snakes they are there for a reason. It is probably looking for mice and consider it a blessing. Most snakes will run from you before you ever see them.
This is a funny story. I worked for a flower bed company and they always pushed us to go faster.
Well one day Mr. Faster Faster was going so fast pulling leaves out of a shrub he got a snake along with them. LOL
I had never seen a hognose snake where I live but heard they exist. Well now I know they are in this area. =)
Well laughed hysterically as it really scared him. And I said " Thats what I'm talking about. If you go too fast you can't pay attention to what you are doing."

As nancygibson says, we have very few snakes in the UK, and only the black adder is venomous.
The adders are extremely shy and are very rarely seen, even then it's out in the countryside.
A friend had some pythons as pets and I hated them. I handled them a couple of times knowing that they weren't poisonous but was very nervous anyway! As the knowlegdeable person above says, they are very sensetive to vibrations, so stay well back and stamp hard on the ground (or whack a stick on the ground if you have one) and give them plenty of room to escape.
I'm so glad I live in the wonderful, beautiful, non-threatening UK!

I really like snakes. We're lucky though in a way that in the UK we only have three native snakes and only two of them are common, of those, only the Adder is venomous but its not really common for people to get bitten as they are quite shy. I know farmers do get bitten sometimes if they stand on a sleeping adder nadvertantly. We are gtting more colonies of breeding escaped 'pet' snakes in asome areas though, again, these pose very little threat to people and I always consider myself very lucy if I see a snake when I'm out walking.

If your anything like me you probably screamed bloody murder! That is exactly what I would do, and then RUN!!! I will even scream in the car if I see one in the road (Then I make sure I run it over) One of my worst fears is me or my son getting bit by one.

Snakes are very friendly creatures some times and usually a snake bites you when you intrude on them. It they are mating, they can be very dangerous because like humans, they also enjoy private conjugality. If confronted with a snake say in aroom, its important to know what type of the snake it is-if it a puff adder, then you know its a very non aggressive snake-if its a viper then you know its an aggressive one and you dont need to to attack it because it can jet poison right into your eyes! The Puff adder can be gently rolled away to the bush-Dont kill a snake unless you think it means to attack you, other wise you and me know, snakes will only attack you in self defence, so what would I do if I saw a snake? I would just do nothing and let it go in peace!

I used to have a pet ball python so I'm not all that afraid of snakes. If there were one in my yard I wouldn't do anything about it unless I had a pet that could be hurt by it. If there were one in my house, that would be when I freaked out.

Thankfully I am at a high altitude so we don't have many snakes. But I still worry. That is why last summer I made my hubby and son remove a rock cropping from the front yard I had a neighbor swear he saw a rattler sunning himself there one day. The rocks were gone a few days later.
I hate snakes they are just....well icky.

The only snakes I'm afraid of are the poisonous ones. All you have to do is stay away from them. I've had a coral snake slither right by my foot and not even pay any attention to me. I just froze until it was gone. But I've handled non-poisonous snakes, and it's kind of enjoyable. They're cool and dry, and muscular, very different in feeling from warm-blooded animals.

Eww i hate snakes not only seeing them, the thought of snakes make me feel odd. I am afraid at the same time and i have seen few snakes when i was a kid. We have our farms and when once i was at the mango farm one of the persons who guard our farms came running to me and asked if i would like to see how they catch snakes.
Since i was a kid i showed interest in that and he was very quick in catching a snake and that was a cobra. If at all i see a snake now i will sure try to let that go away from my sight. If that is going to hurt me then i don't mind killing it.

I would probrally pick the snake up and move it. I don't have a fear of snakes. As a child we use to go hunt to find snakes to play with. Weird, huh? It was always gartner snakes which are harmless.
I am betting that you backed up slowly away from the snake without making a noise. Or atleast I think thats what you would have done. I have an older sister who is afraid of snakes she would have just stood there without moving till the snake slithered away.

Well, you got part of that right! I did back up slowly and quietly...then I ran into the house, got my 22 revolver, loaded it with birdshot and proceeded to get him.
When I got back, he was gone...so now I am very cautious about going in the back yard! (in an Arnold Shwartzeneggar voice) HE'LL BE BAAACK!!!!
