My son asked me this today and I had to ask you MyLotters......

Do you think people will open their eyes and truly change to make a difference about global warming or do you think they will continue to have a "let the next generation worry about it" attitude?
I looked at my son and realized most of us do exactly what he said. If we get active in environmentalism we're quick to be called "tree huggers". If we speak up about global warming we're told we are "over reacting".
Do you think we'll ruin or own world by putting it off for the next generation?

Hell yeah. I think this is a serious problem in these days. There are warning everywhere but people just don't bother to change anything in there lives. You should start with not throwing litter on the ground at all like I do. And then use car as little as possible. I'm am really worried about the next generations and my retierment too.

I understand compltely. I think people are just too worried about themselves and think it's someone elses problem. Sad.

Every show I watch, every news article I view, every time I toss out a recylable bottle I think more and more about our environment. People need to stop thinking about what can happen and take action before it is too late. I have told my husband that we are doing this whether he likes it or not. It is the attitude of those that feel that they need to do nothing that is causing problems. How we can motivate them is beyond me.

Well, there are still people who don't believe global warming exists, or that it's a real threat, or that it's not caused by mankind (the current U.S. president has fallen into one of more of these categories at various times).
I think momentum is growing to do something about it; even the heads of major U.S. companies are talking about it to political leaders. That's often when real action happens--when moneyed interests realize that global warming is going to hurt their bottom line and it's to their benefit to do something about it.
It would have been better if these actions had been taken years ago, but better late than never (I hope).

I just wish people would wake up. Even if it didn't exist, can't they see the harm we've done to our world? It's horrendous. This world was a gift to us and we treat it like there's plenty more available.

I do my best to be an environmentally responsible citizen... and I agree that we can't seem to do quite right either way -- we're either "apathetic" or we're "fanatic," depending on who is doing the talking.
I just try to remind myself of the ancient proverb that says, in part, "Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children..."

I don't know what will happen, you can try & do things to fix global warming for the next generation but that's exactly what the last generation should have been doing as well - since all the generations have brought in new ways of killing things (polution, forest destruction etc), it's kind of stuck with this current generation to try & fix all the problems others have helped to cause.
Does that make sense?
I think the best you can do is your own little things, maybe try getting a solar powered water heater, nothing major but everything helps, plant trees, replace all normal light globes with fluorescent ones (not sure on the spelling there), put in rain water tanks - lots of little things can be done & even if your neighbour isn't doing it, at least you know you're doing something to help. Then you can encourage others to follow suit & things will start to change.
At least i hope that's how it will happen!

yes, i agree. we should do what we can do. we dont have to so something big like plant a lot of trees but we could help in our own little ways. just like what you have said. but we should act together.
we should do this together and do it now.

Sadly I don't think enough people take global warming seriously. They talk about it as if it's some abstract, airy-fairy theory but the reality is it's happening right now. Part of the problem of course is that we've been hearing about it for such a long time that it's no longer "news".
As with everything I think some people are just too apathetic to really make the effort but I also think many people don't want to acknowledge the problem because in doing so they may actually be expected to make sacrifices for the sake of the environment. People don't want to be inconvenienced - perish the thought they should stop using their car and actually walk! So yes, I think ultimately it will be left to future generations to try to do something about it and by that time it will probably be too late.

Yes I think a lot of people will go along their merry little way and not really care, it amazes me that while our Governments are talking about making us drink recycled water people are still watering their gardens, to me the water situaltion here in Australia is at crisis point and the they are still watering their plants with fresh water, I water mine with water I have used so they are doing ok or the ones I have picked to try and keep alive. Oh I wish people would wake up and start giving back to this earth before it is too late....time is running out I think.

Yes I do think we'll ruin it. I know many say it is a load of garbage but I think there is evidence to prove that we have something to do with the weird weather

Not everyone cares. It's sad, I wish we could have a better place for our children. It's summer now where I live and it's unbareably hot. You wouldn't see people outside because it's too sunny. It wasn't like this 5 years ago. It's horrible. It's all because of burning plastics, rubbers, there are so many contributors to this. Did you watch waterwold? Do you think that it will happen in the future? It's possible right?

Sorry, but I think this global warming thing is 99% mother nature. So, how do I change the natural processes of the planet? I cannot blame global warming on man, as yet there is no intelligent proof. So, who will we blame when the next ice age comes around? How can the "GW" thing be explained before man arrived on the scene? By the way, I have cut down my driving by over 2/3, so I have done something. Whoopee, more and more cars hit the roads every day. I see nothing wrong with hugging trees or cutting them down when required. I cannot jump on the "GW" hype bandwagon. There are too many other possible causes that make far too much sense, sorry liberals.

Honestly I do-- I think global warming is a Huge Problem.. One that our grandkids and great grandkids will face. We have been causing this warming for years now. I don’t see enough people changing their ways—it’s sad but we do have the mentality “let them handle it—it’s not our problem” or “It won’t affect me personally”. But it will- It is going to affect our families for generations. I think more celebrities should get involved—this might make the Average person think more about it- and take more responsibility. I agree with you on the “tree hugger” comment. Seems like anyone who tries to do anything for the environment is labeled this-

We will contribute to stoping the global warming by recycling, making sure our car emission is in good condition, planting trees and maybe other solutions that we can take to help our future generations.

The only thing that is standing in the way of all this "environmentalism" that you're saying is politics. Everything is determined by politics and no matter no innoative things might get, nothing will ever go through if the politicians aren't there to support it and let it pass. Global warming can never be stopped nor prevented, but it be slowed down and decresed considerably with the help of scientific knowledge, innovation, and politics regardless of whatever the current generation is.

I agree.. but not JUST politics are involved. The big businesses aren't all that keen on making some expensive changes. Instead, many of them pack up and move to countries that have no laws against killing the land and water they're around.

I'm a tree hugger and proud of it. I believe in global warming and I do the best I can to help. I hope your son is one will make other adults pay attention too, I also hope that other young people and those of us already sitting up and paying attention can do the same for others.

I think it will be like recycling. I heard that half of us recycle. So I think half of us will try to do the things that will help the planet and the rest of us won't.

Most people don't like change, and they don't like to be inconvenienced. So they won't take climate change seriously until its effects impact on them in a way they're very unhappy with. Having to do something that they're not used to doing and that takes extra effort; giving up something they're used to having--unless they can see clear benefits, they're not going to bother. They may talk about wanting things to be better for their children, but they don't see any relationship between what they're doing now, and how that will affect future generations.

My favortie movie is the day after tomorrow. I know that things wont happen that fast but the way the weather is now a days. More hurricanes then normal, tornados, snow. I've never had to wear a coat in April in Louisiana before and shorts with a santa hat because it was pretty warm then. The changes have already started and not many people are doing anything about it. So I guess we will keep turning our head and say let the next generation worry about it.
