You know, I've never really understood the obsession with breaking down genres and adding genres all the time and stuff. I mean, I always thought of metallica just as heavy metal.
I never even heard of speed metal until fairly recently, and I thought punk involved a certain kind of political statement as well as just the music. Am I missing something here, or am I just getting old? I guess since I like almost every kind of music, I don't really get into the classification thing as much.

Most would say that in the 80s they were thrash metal, in the 90s they were kind of a hard rock/metal hybrid (the self-titled "Black Album" was definitely metal in my opinion, but I'd say that Load and Reload definitely fit this description). St. Anger saw an attempt at returning to their thrash roots, but it was ill received by fans and critics. From the 2 new songs that are floating around on Youtube, it's hard to say what their next album will sound like, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.

I wanted to like St. Anger, but I just didn't. There are some good riffs on there, and there are a lot of parts of songs that I like, but overall it just doesn't do it for me I guess. At least they went for a harder sound and didn't do a bunch of ballads or something like that.
