library card used to free in new york city. even if you lost your old one too. nowaday library branches are charging so much for late fees, damage book or cd, lost cards. it's ridicules!!! now library is also on top rank robbing client for extra money.
library cards lost or stolen should be free to community. library staff make people pay more than 20 dollars for late charges on books, tapes and cd. the most worst part, u can't get new card until you pay off your other ridicules fees. even credit card companies don't even charge us for new card.
do you think library should charge customer for late fee? is it fair to be pay almost two dollar for new card? don't think nowaday libraries are also on top rank for charging people useless fees???

i think it's ok to charge for late fees/returns, damaged items and lost cards. they give it initially for free. but it is the borrower's responsibility to return the items on the said date, and return them in a condition they borrowed it. some people are taking free stuffs for granted. this will teach them responsibility and discipline. not all things in life are free.

You're lucky that you have a public library, here where I live we don't have a public library. I believe it's ok for the library to charge a big sum of money to late charges and damaged items, so that whenever someone borrows a book from the library they will take care of the item and return it on the day specified. As for paying for the libraby card, the library probably wanted people to keep their cards in a safe place and not ask for a new one everytime it's stolen because they leave the card lying around.
