"Stealing Discussions"

I have noticed that at least two people have started exactly the same discussion that I had started, except they were about a month apart from mine. One even used the exact wording, and the other was started by someone on my friends list. While they were not completely the same, they are pretty close. I don't mind, though, but it does make me wonder. I don't really think it was on purpose, though.
Have you had someone pretty much duplicate a discussion you started almost exactly? Do you think it was on purpose?

Hello, desertdarlene, sorry to hear that. I had just found out some copy and paste masterpieces on the hotlist, the yare exactly the same except the photos, even the spelling errors are the same,so there is no doubt the member is plagiarizing.
I had been stolen some of the discussions before but I think those members had already been banned.
I always think if someone start a similar discussion ,it will be ok because there may be different ways in asking and you can reply it in different thing, but the situation will be different if it is copy and paste stuff.

Yeah, I don't mind that someone started the same type of discussion. I feel that people shouldn't have to worry that someone started the same type of discussion or not. It's just that when they use almost the same exact wording that I begin to get annoyed. I thought about reporting them, but I am not sure they did it on purpose, so I left it alone.

And with the number of new members signing up for myLot, there's no real protection from plagiarism, at least for the time being while those posts stay somewhere undetected. There should be stricter controls for that, though I'm not sure what exactly should be done.
Maybe trace the offender via his/her payout route and then sue him/her for plagiarism (after all, I've already seen many people copy and paste copyrighted articles from other websites)? Haha.

No - to be honest I struggle trying to think of something to talk about so I mainly respond to them rather than start them..I don't think people would copy intentionally - especially one month apart...you may have just started a discussion which everyone wants to talk about and we all hav same idea!

I'm the same way, I generally like to respond rather than start discussions. I like to think it's just coincidence. I know that there may be someone out there that is groaning because they started a discussion similar to this one. But, on one discussion, I'm pretty sure it was copied because it used an expression that is fairly unique to me.

Yeah, I know. There's nothing you can do unless you know it's the exact same wording.

I came across one exactly the same as my banana discussion and saw that it was started a month or two after mine and wondered if they stole it from me....... It did bother me a little, but be more upset if it was a personal discussion which someone had copied word for word one that had no meaning to them but getting responses which they don't answer back too.....
Report it to mylot if you are really concerned

Yes, that would definitely bother me if someone stole something personal. I had that happen to a friend about something that was really special in his heart. I would be furious if it even slightly resembled my discussion in that case.

well, we really cant be sure, but i think that's so much a coincidence. well, those people should start using their brains and start coming up with their own ideas, and therefore own discussions. they have no originality! they are like plagerizing our works! i hate those kind of people!

Yes, there seems to be a lot of coincidence. It's entirely possible that these people really did come up with the idea on their own.

Yes, i do notice someone who made a discussion pretty similar, a little dissapointed about that but what can i do for that, i just give them reply. Maybe be they just try to make more earning here.

Thanks to both of you my friends. Yes, it is disappointing when you see that. I have been on this site for a long time and that was the first time I ever had that happen to me. I had it happen on another site right after I joined.

Hi! I don't want to think about this because it already happened to me twice, by the very same person in my friends' list at that! I don't want to put too much emphasis to this because I don't want to cause animosity, but if it happened for the third time, I will just go on and report this member. The titles weren't exactly the same, just like in your case, but VERY similar in terms of content and thought. I don't want to accuse this member of copying but then I guess it's best to check first whether a discussion is going to be duplicated before starting it. Happy myLotting!

i dont think it was on purpuse but i know it happens. i have looked for discussions about a certain thing and found like 4 that were all the same. i have started one then later saw that someone else had too before i started mine and i felt really bad for doing it. i just didnt see theres there. i try to look first but sometimes there are so many you miss it. i hate the discussions that ask over and over what is your favorite food? what pet would you like to be? etc i see so many of those. now if a person had a discussion word for word of mine or anyones i would call that abuse that means they are copying and pasting a discussion and that is just wrong.

Yeah, I considered reporting them, but I'm really not sure. I'm a person that likes to think a person is innocent rather than just accuse them. And, since the discussions I started were a while back, it may just be coincidence. Or, it could be that someone did that on purpose thinking that they wouldn't get caught because the discussion they copied was so old.

If the post used the exact wording, it is obvious that the discussion was stolen.
However, if they are not, I would give them the benefit of the doubt.
You can monitor the same person who "stole your discussions" to see if the incident happens again in future. If your discussions are duplicated by the same person, then he/she must have done on purpose.

I agree, it's hard to say when they don't use the exact wording. In one case, it was mostly the title that was similar to mine and there was an unusual way that I said it. The introduction to the discussion was similar, but parts of it was not. That's why I didn't overreact and report them.

If you noticed that members have been stealing your discussions and you are very positively sure about it, then you should report to myLot so that it can be investigated and the member who did that, if proven guilty, would be warned and eventually banned.

ideally, we have to check if our discussions to be posted have been previously submitted by other mylotters or not. but that would be time consuming on our part. if there are times that topics submitted by members are of similar contents or titles, i think it was just a coincidence and was not done intentionally.
I had two discussions that have been rephrased but the contents are the same. what i did was to give a response to their discussion inviting them to "come over my place" and give comments too. so far they have not come yet and "visited my place."

I usually try to do a search, but I admit that it's not always easy finding discussions that haven't been done before. Even this topic probably has been discussed many times before.

No I have not experienced that yet. But I have seen it on other discussions that I have responded to. I don't think it is right. I think that is one of the reasons that they won't let you cut and paste until you hit 500 posts. I am not there yet. But when I get there I doubt I will use it.

It's possible that that's the reason they don't want people to cut and paste. I think they figure that people who have reached that number are serious about being here and know how to use the site.

I think it's okay. I think i he or she is curios about a mylot new users response. Maybe, for the members of mylot, they could or maybe not respond to these questions if they have answered or questioned these before....lol=)

Yes, I agree. If they're new, they probably haven't seen the other discussions. But, sometimes I used certain sayings that most people do not use. That's when I get suspicious.

Yes, there are policies and you can alert Mylot and have the discussion removed. In my case, I'm not 100% certain and I don't want to convict someone unless I'm completely certain that they did something wrong.

I thinik if its a duplicvate discussion rteport it. if its one of your friends tell him to report his own by admitting the same to mylot that it was a mistake. If its the habit with the user then report the spamnmer as its against the guidelines.

If the wording was same then definately it was stealing, but if the topic is same and expression is different then I feel it was not done on purpose. I feel two persons can have same ideas but expressing it is always no two persons can have same wording.

Yes, I have seen two or more discussions which are similar but you can never say for sure that they have been stolen because there are a lot of similar things in all of our lives. And even if you know for sure that a person has stolen someone else's discussion, there is not much we can do because it will difficult to prove so unless the discussion is word to word similar.

I can't confirm either way. Sometimes people use tricky ways to earn some money & and they find no wrong for that. Its the duty of MYLOT to check on stealing..

there was a time when i posted a discussion only to find out that i used an exact same subject as a previous post. it was only when i posted the discussion did i realize that.
so now, before i post a discussion, i first try to search for similar discussions. if i see that my discussion had already been discussed well, then i don't post it anymore. but if i see and feel that the previous posts do not have the answer that i am looking for, then i go ahead and post the discussion.
i guess we can't really avoid such cases. with mylot having almost 90,000 members, it would really be difficult to post a unique discussion.

I have not meet this problem yet.I like to respond to my friends' discussions, share my opinions with them.Sometimes I also start discussions, but not too much, unless I have some new things to discuss with others or I want to know more about something.
So do not mind it,just make yourself happy in mylot!
