When you buy a DSLR camera, you are buying into that brand's whole system, such as in its lens and flash system. See which brand provides good support in your location and area of interest. Cameras such as the Nikon D80 or Canon 400D are good DSLR to start with, and buying the best lens from these system allows you to upgrade your camera in future with no difficulties when your skills require it.

What makes you want a DSLR? Do you have a film slr with lenses? I would say if you do to keep in the same brand family especially if youve shelled out lots of money for the lenses. Try to remember at the end of the day the dslr is just the body, once you really get into it youll start shelling out more for lenses than the camera itself. Its a curse..i tell ya ;)
