Do you double CHECK your doors and windows when you sleep or go out??

burglar - How do you prevent our home being burglared?

'When I went to sleep, I would do this to make sure they were closed and locked properly so that I did not need to worry and slept well. I were afraid someone would intrude to my house. When I went out, I would close the windows of my house and sometimes I would leave the light or television on if i went out at the night time' Do you do this before you go to sleep and when you go out? Is burglar a serious problem in your city or country? It seems that it is a serious problem in australia, there may be 10 -20% of people whom their home had been burglared once or more. Do you switch on the alarm at home? Do you have any ways to make sure your home is safe from it?? Do share your thoughts.

I always keep my doors and windows locked, even in the daytime. There are a lot of weirdos around.lol. There really isn't a big problem around me but it doesn't hurt to be safe. I don't have an alarm system but I have five rather big dogs and they let me know when a leaf falls.lol. I don't think a burglar would come too close after hearing them bark.

I agree with you, brendalee, that it is better to be safe. In our place though, the automated alarm system is unpopular because, burglary has never become a problem to contend with. At present, I have a reliable dog to bark at anyone who comes close, just like you do.

LOL. One dog may be more effective than the alarm system, five dogs are perfect especially if they are barking at the same time, they can keep an eye of every corners of your house.

Out of habit, I double check all the locks and make sure everything is well secured. Burglary is not much of a problem in our place. But we can never leave our lives to chance. We are aware that burglars are mostly ready to strike a kill if caught. The life of everyone in my family is a treasure for me.

Yes and yes! I am normally the last to go to bed or walk out of the house. So before I do I double check all the doors and windows. We live in a small town so the crime is not too bad. We also have an alarm system that we use on a regular basis. It is hard to believe that things have come to this now. My tells me that when she was growing up her parents never locked the doors or windows and they never had to worry about people braking into thier house.

Hi easy888, well that what we should do all the time if we want our house to be safe. I always double check all the doors and windows before going out or going to sleep. But since becoming mylotian, I hardly sleep so I dont have to double check everything! My husband likes to let the main door slightly ajar when we go out for awhile, so as to create the impression that there is someone at home. He also turned the TV on. I dont agree with him. This is not a tip for home safety. I dont know any other new ways to make home as safe as it can be but I think keep your house lock at all time is the best solution.

No, I have to say that we do not check the windows and half the time we do not check the doors. But, we live in a rural area and we rarely have any trouble. We have lived her for 12 years and our house has been broken into once, and it was someone that we knew and it was because he was mad at us. But, there have been no other burglaries out here in the time we have lived here. We are looking to move into a city close to where we live now, and since we do not know the area well and there are a lot of burglaries it seems in that town, I will get into the habit of it. But, out here I have no worries.

I am sorry that your crime rate is so high that you fear someone coming into your home at night. It is NOT a very good feeling. As I have lived in an area that I would not even leave my home at night. When I lived in that area...you know I would be sure that I checked all the windows and doors. I was fearful also that someone would come in during the night and possibly get to my children without my knowledge. A mom's worse fear, I guess. But when someone was murdered across the parking lot and second just around the corner from us...two separate cases and only days apart. We decided that it was time to move. Some time later...we even moved out of that state to another some 3,000 miles away!!! Now, it is said that we live in the "Safest City in Oklahoma". Regardless of the title or award going to this city, it is not absent of its crimes and the city neighboring us has a very large crime rate! So, we still have to be careful. I will check doors to be sure that they are locked or downstairs windows to be sure they are closed and locked. But if I fail to do it one night or the other, it does not wake me in fear that I had forgotten....that is what the metal baseball bat beside my bed is for! ha ha

No, it is like you said...it depends on the area. One area will be bad and there is no way you want to cross a street at night. But then there will be another area that you can walk a mile and feel safe the entire time! My daughter and I would often walk around our neighborhood here at night for exercise. And...it is very safe. :) Except for an occasional ankle bitter dog that might have gotten loose from someone's yard. But even then, they are pretty easy to scare off. :)

Generally sydney is safe, but it may be a but dangerous in some of the suburbs, my suburb is not really too bad, but to play safe,it is better to check everything before i sleep. Honestly,I think it may be a bit dangerous if you go out at the nighttime in the US,no matter at which states, isn;it ??

I stay in an apartment complex and we dont really have an electroic security system. We do have a security guard though. There is a burglar problem but we stay in a good locality and usually the need to double check doors and windows does not arise. We, in fact, sometimes even sleep with our windows open.

We do not sleep with the doors open..we sleep with the windows open. I like sleeping in fresh air and so far our area has never had much of a problem.

Oh yes I always check. my cousin just got robbed not long ago in the middle of the day she had left and someone got through her windows and took a lot of stuff her computer. her sons Playstation and a box that had money in it.So it is hard to trust anybody anywhere. Also I look my car doors. my sister got robbed from coming into my house. She left her purse in here car. She was bringing in her son when he was just about 2 weeks old and her daughter who was 3 then and at the some time someone broke in her car took her purse took her wallet and her cell phone. it was on a Sunday so she couldn't call her bank to cancel her checks or anything or her credit cards.

its an sop or we regularly check our doors and windows every night before going to bed. if ever we will go out of town we not only check windows but we also remove plugs of our appliances for safety purposes. we do not have an alarm for we live in a compound so we just tell our relative neighbor to look at it once in a while

Iam doing it daily. I was very much afraid of thieves. We are fed up with theaft. In my place recently the robbery is increased and people are very much afraid and they began to fix grills in the front and back doors as well. I wonder in Australia also the same condition.

Well i have to admit, that i am not paying to much attention on locking the door or closing the windows when i go to sleep, maybe it is because i live in a very small peaceful country like place now, and i can not imagine any body burglaring the house at night. Yes. I do know that this is a mistake. Even when i go out side to take the dog for a walk for half an hour i leave the house open, knowing that my next door neighbors are at home, and they will see if anyone that is strange is hanging around. Yep i guess that is also a mistake. I guess this is a kind of a habit. But i did act differently until two months ago. I used to live in the big city, and there we always used to lock the house, even if their was someone in the house, because their were an never ending stream of weird people and burglars, so we just did not take the chance, of somthing happening. But here it is quiet. No alarm system and doors are always open.

Yes i guess it is. Easy in what part of australia do you live? I know when i was in australia for two monthes, in parts of malbourne people did leave their house open wen they went out to take the dog for a walk, so i guess it does depend where you live at.

We are pretty laid back in Wales about this, our doors are rarely locked and we normally have windows open. I do lock up if we go out, but friends know just to try the door if they wander round for a visit and even the postman will do that with a parcel if he doesnt get an immediate answer,

Oh well when I am alone by myself I do check that everything is locked but when my husband is at home here well that is different due to he is a security officer and we do check that the doors are locked but I do feel a lot safer having him in the home with me. I do however leave the light on when we go out and I used to leave the radio or television on but not any more.

ya.. always when i go outside or when i sleep i use to check whether all the doors are closed well or not. burglar is not a serious problem in my town, but 3-4 times there was a news about theft in the area behind our colony. so i use to take care about the safty of my things in home.
