from the pavement?Do you bend over and pick-up a penny off the ground?
If not, how much money need it be for you to be inspired to bend and pick it up? a nickle, dime, quarter - or paper money?
My husband picks up every penny he sees (and can get to) he says that at work some of the guys come back from buying their lunch and just throw their pennies in the air to land where they will. He gathers sometimes more than a dollar a week in pennies off the ground."see a penny, pick it up, and all day long you'll have good luck"

I am a cheap SOB and will pick up a penny. You can never tell when you(or someone else) may need that penny. Some stores are really tight when it comes to change and if the total was $10.01,you know you will get alot of change.I do like the idea of a penny cup in stores.

yes! the penny cup is a great idea in the store. but it irks me if I am digging for a penny in my purse and the cashier stands there waiting, impatiently - never offering that there is a penny cup there .... I do not realize it myself until after I find and give her the penny or two I was digging for.

I understand your frustration with the cashier.I watch for cashiers who do these little things making the shopping experience more enjoyable and comment on it to management.I HATE shopping,so appreciate when someone works to make it easier to get in and out.

Pennies, nickles, dimes, and quarters if it is money I pick it up or point it out to my daughter. My brother is one of those incredibly lucky people it is like he can smell money and he regularly finds $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills every where. this is the same one who while 9 years old (I was just one at the time) we lived in Germany and he jumps off the swing and starts digging in the sand and finds about !5.00 in german money in the sand!!! As a teenager (we lived in harrison AR at the time army brats we were) he would go into A & W and stick his hands in the pool table pockets and come out with money.

Funny to have come upon this discussion. Today my sister wanted to treat me to a cup of coffee from Dunkin Donuts. My brother who works there just got off his shift. He came over to the car while we waited in line and on the ground where he stood he spied a penny. He bent to pick it up and found another, and another and another. What he didn't find I was pointing out to him. He found about 15 pennies in all. A penny saved is a penny earned. If I find a penny on the ground I pick it up, unless it is covered in a nasty substance.

sounds like someone was waiting in line just like you and began cleaning out their cup holders (where the pennies inevitably end up!) and did as my husband's co-workers and flung them to the air.
Well, how fun for your brother! lol. I used to work at Dunkin Donuts. Great coffee, what a nice sister you have!

Well I pick up mere pennies on here all Day. I can spend a lot of time on a thread reading it and most of the responses, then more time to type in my response.
It is funny to see the ones that said no and it was not worth it, then they spend 3 minutes typing and reading to get their 2-3 cents for it!LOL
I think everyone on mylot should see the way that pennies add up to dollars. I have $21.43 and I made it by saving pennies from responses. They really do add up!

I am like your husband and will pick up anything that someone else has thrown away . A penny may not mean much but if you throw all your pennies away they would add up and I don't believe in wasting money no matter what it is .
We work on here everyday for pennies a day yet we all still do it and we also see how in a short period of time our pennies can add up , not enough to ever make us rich by any means but we do earn money each month to say we made something :)

I pick up pennies. A few years ago, I received an email about saying a little prayer when you find a penny. Why not? On it, it states "in God we trust." So, now when I find a penny, I thank God for my good fortune and ask him to bless me and my family.

Sure I always pick up pennies from the pavement, if I see them. My family always said it was good luck, although I never had any extroardinay luck. Actualy no luck at all in my life but I still pick them up. Odd. I am in Canada and I have picked up more USA pennies than I can count. (lol)

I pick up every penny I see because it is a learned habit from childhood. My first-grade teacher did not believe me when I told her that a dime she found was mine. So, in order to get my brownie-scout dues paid, I searched for pennies underneath the monkey bars after the little boys were through playing. Luckily for me I found a few pennies that gradually reduced my IOU's. Since dues were only 8 cents, and my mother sided with the teacher, it was the only way I knew how to get the money. To this day I realize the importance of pennies.

Thank you for sharing your sweet story with us, for what it is worth - I believe you :)
I love how their doubts made you determined.
My brother and I would be given the task to clean out the crevices of the seats when my father was going to go clean the station wagon out... we always found enough coins to treat us both to the matinée and get popcorn and a coke to boot. (back then tickets cost all of 25 cents and the popcorn and coke were a nickel each.)
since it was only my brother and I that rode in the back bench seat and that is where all the coins were found, as I look back I highly suspect that my father had planted them there as an incentive and reward for our zeal in helping him out. This way he could give us the funds for our special treat by way of us doing something willingly for him - without letting on to us that he was giving it.

aw, thank you for sharing your little story. that is neat. I can remember searching out the car seats before dad would clean the car - we always found enough to go to the movies and get popcorn and a coke. (back then it was only 25 cents for the movie and 5 cents each for the soda and popcorn)
Since my brother and I were the only ones who sat in the rear seat where we always found the coins - I highly suspect my father planted the coins in there as an incentive - a means of paying us for helping him without us knowing that he was.

Regardless of what denomination is that if I saw a money on the ground I'm going to bend it and pick it up for you can't have a dollar without a penny. I adore people who are doing that and not ashame of it. Ya, right is like a lucky penny to me too. If you can pick up a lot just like your husband, then you can buy a burger for the day already. Not bad haah!

I always pick up pennies, I'm not rich enough to let any money go by without salvaging it. I think its horriffic that people can throw miney away, if its not of use to them, why don't they put it in a charity box so it can do some good for those less fortunate?

very good I agree, if they are too good to hold on to pennies - put it in the poor box where it can collect and be distributed as needed. of course, maybe they said a prayer that a poor or less fortunate person would come across the pennies that they tossed....if so, their prayers were answered in the form of my husband, hehehe.. he does not believe he is too good to pick up the pennies.

My parents used to say the same thing, and yes I do pick up pennies. We have a piggy bank just for pennies and we collect them all year, then we turn them into the bank and use them when we go camping. You would be surprised at how many pennies you can find lying around and how they add up. My son even helps gather pennies for our penny bank.

that's a grand idea, I wish that our bank had a coin counter/sorter - so we needn't roll them all. But, I went through and rolled all our saved pennies when DH was out of work a few years ago and times were tight. I ended up with $44 just in pennies. It bought enough groceries to see us through the week anyhow.

I am one of those people who are happy when they pick up a penny. I feel that if you are too good to pick up free money, then all the more for me. I get laughed at sometimes when I bend down and pick up pennies. It is not only bending down and picking up pennies, I also look at the change thing in newspaper racks, soda machines and even change machines. I have gotten more than a dollar out of a soda machine from people not getting the money out. I have gotten five dollars (no joke) from a machine. I was so happy that I had my lunch paid for. So whether it be penny or more, I will always pick up. You never know, you may just find paper money. The most paper money I found was $20. I say yeah to all those who bend down to pick up that copper piece of currency. I always think of that old saying "see a penny, pick it up, and all day pick it up." I also make a wish on it.

aha, you stumbled upon the topic I was going to start today! It was in a movie I just finished watching called "My John Doe" staring Tony Curtis and Barbara Stanwick.
My little boy found $20 under a store counter once, he gave the money to the owner/operator and asked for her to call him if no one claims the money. The store owner was so pleased with his honesty at age 7 that she always treated him very well. He did get the $20 and spent quite a bit in that very store. It was a confectionery.
my 3 year old came up to me with $100 bill in the grocery store once.... as I was saying we would take it to customer service another woman from a few aisles away came darting at me and grabbed it out of my hand. lol. I don't know if it was truly hers or not, but she sure was glad to get it.

A quarter. Otherwise I'd just start collecting change and stretching my wallet out.. then, I might have more money. But where I'm from, it's rare to find anything on the streets. I live in a tourist down and we have a huge vacuum car thing that goes around and vacuums the streets.
I did find a ten on the ground once. I was DEFINATELY inspired to pick THAT up.
