I have an 8-month old lab... a really delightful puppy, i must say.. but he has a bad habit of jumping on anyone who calls his name!!!! he is too easily excitable.. but at close to 30 kg.. he can be a handful. Any ideas how to stop him jumping on people?

What I learned in my pups obedience class was kind of simple and it worked strangely enough. If possible, and i know your pup must be large by now but totally ignore the jumping behavior. Just look up and pretend it is not happening. then as soon as he is sitting and looking at you like "What the heck.....she's not upset"., then pat him and show him that is the behavior you like. They are pretty smart and catch on pretty quickly. But I know it will probably be rough when you are attempting to ignore being wallowed on by lab...LOL! But it's a good method anyway. Good luck!

thanks.. that is really hard to do... i tend to fall backwards when he jump on me.. imagine 30 kg of lean meat running towards u at full puppy speed... add that with a sloppy wet tongue to boot... :) I am looking at some obedience training classes.. hope to curb his bad behaviors ASAP... however, we do not have much classes in my area... I will try out your method! wish me luck! i am keeping my fingers crossed... :)

This trick works but only with the person who does it though, I tried it with my Black lab Doddie, yeah she got it on the third day, but kept on doing the Jumping thing to other people. Unfortunately they are not as crazy as I am for the poor thing, they just run away and assume they are going to get mauled by my big baby hahah

our lab does the exact same thing! he is close to 10 mos. and he is ULTRA HYPER and he just wants to play with other dogs and people. he goes berserk upon seeing other dogs and he makes a lot of mess when he take him out of his cage, but what we do with him is that when we call him or show ourselves to him, we sit/squat first so he feels like he doesn't have to like "reach" you. they tend to want to play a lot by banging on people/jumping ON them, so that's what we do. he is a bit responsive to it but he still would have the tendency to jump on us at times but he does crouch down when we are crouched down too.

Hi love, I do sympathise with you. I have 3 adorable labs.... yes 3!!!!!!!! crazy or what!!!! What I did was fill an old cola bottle with some dried peas or some gravel, when they do something they are not supposed to, just give it a good shake. It does stun them. By now, all l have to do is get the bottle and they calm down immediatley. Give it a try.... it worked for mine Good luck and let me know how it goes. Take Care Lynwen
