Solar panels and wind generators are relatively easy to install and something most people in indusrtialized countries can easily afford to do. Why don't we do this more as individuals and small companies? Would we rather pay the utilities than have them pay us?

Its being done by some individuals and governments but many people are resistant on it due to some of the complications and the slightly higher costs in the beginning. I think its better to invest even more in these technologies as well as deploy them. Improve the technologies and make them not just eco-friendly but make it user friendly and cost-friendly so they have a full edge on the technology.

I advocate building one's own, because it tends to be cheaper -- plus who can say that self-sufficiency is a bad idea? Why don't more people do it? Well, many are now...especially as they realize that they cannot rely on things stay the same, and that thinking things will never change (where most things as do them in general are no longer wise are helpful) is foolish.

One of the main reasons they do not is the maintence is higher, and when they need repairs it can take longer to get someone out there to fix it... and well In the 80's many things I myself had brought that claimed to last longer, and be better than the original thing like the special light bulbs burned out faster than the regular ones and were twice as expensive, and the low flow toilet well... The plunger becomes the best friend with that.. because it is so low flow it does not flush right.... So its that kind of thing is what turns most people away from trying to use earth friendly products...
I however did have a lightbulb that lasted for 4 years that was environmental friendly it was 20 dollar bulb though! .. I just got lucky and the power and light company came to our school did a presentation and my name was drawn out of the hat as I randomly stood up and told them the items I wanted lol. The student who drew my name grew white and said.. my name and the teachers and students all ran up to see, as I had not known yet lol.. they had other things but I always wanted an earth friendly light bulb lol.. I know I am weird.. :) . - DNatureofDTrain
