Do you have a child that is big for his or her age?

My son is large for his age. He is 32 months old and weighs 50 pounds and is about 42 inches tall. Most people think he is 4 years old, and expect him to act accordingly, then they are shocked when I say hes not even three! I am running out of silly comebacks ("we call him Moose for a reason!" or "yeah, my hubby and i know how to grow them, huh!") and growing tired of the dirty looks i get when hes throwing a tantrum in walmart. Any of you out there know what Im going thru?

Listen to your mommy instincts. They're usually right. When my son was small, he was very large for his age. He was also a late talker so he was frustrated because he couldn't communicate as well as the other kids. He got even larger, and chubbier. He's now a 15 year old honor student, 6'2" tall, and doesn't have an ounce of fat on him. He's on both the basketball and football teams. I didn't pay attention to the doctors when they were concerned because his weight was in the 95th percentile and height in the 75th percentile (he was big and chubby). Love your child, feed him and make sure he gets plenty of exercise. Doctors know how to be doctors, but moms know how to be moms.

My daughter has always been big for her age too.She is 8 and taller than every child in her class again this year, except one other girl who is about the same as her. Everyone thinks she is 10 or 11.

My second son was long when he was born. He never was a baby. He has always been big. He and his older brother were often mistaken for twins. There is 21 months between them. He is now 42 and at 6ft wow. I just had to stop and calculate his age. Where does time go. I also have a grandson and nephew that were big for their age, and it is difficult to not treat them according to size instead of age. My grandson is 18 now and is close to 6 foot tall He has always been at least a head tall than the other kids in his class

My son is 31 inches and he is only 15 months. The doctors tell me he is tall for his age. My daughter is 4 years old and she weighs 45 pounds and the doctors told me that she is a little on the chunky side and I need to start cutting back on milk, so we are doing that now. I think 50 pounds for a 32 month old is kind of high and I would talk with a doctor about that.

Is that your son in your avatar? He is cute! I think some doctors are weird, because they don't say anything about my sons weight and he is 31 pounds, but he is also 31 inches. So I guess his height helps thin him out some. Goodness.... Our boys are going to be basket ball players! LOL!

He has consistently been in the 80% and higher since he was 6 months old. He isnt fat at all, and his Pedi isn't worried about him because of the fact that he has been growing consistently. This kid is mostly muscle and energy lol

My neice is 4 and weighs 65 and is as tall as my 6 yr old. Also let me add....my 6 yr old is the tallest in her class and she also weighs 65. It is common to see some children are bigger than others. I wouldn't even remark if someone says something. What is it anyones business anyways? One day you will probably have a star football player and then everyone will be talking about him differently:)

Sounds like he might be a basketball player too. As for the potty training, I babysit a 4 yr old who still wears pull ups. As long as you are trying, don't let everyone else judge you.

Hubby sure hopes hes a football player! Thanks for your response...its just so hard when i get the evil eye and people make comments. I especially hate the "why is a kid that big not pottytrained???" grr! (BTW we are working on it lol)

My son is turning 3 in june and now weighs 35pounds and 36 inches tall. Oftentimes, I get the same reaction from people whenever I say that he's only 2 years old. His father is 6'1" and I stand 5'3". I once used a height predictor in one of the baby websites and it says that my son's height would be around 6'4" when he turns 18.

That's weird, my son is only 15 months and already 31 inches. If 36 inches is tall for an almost 3 year old, then dang, I hate to see how tall my son will be when he is 3.... Goodness... I wonder if they have a BIG AND TALL for TODDLERS? LOL!

My 5 year old has always been about a head taller than all the other kids his age. He's just over 4 feet tall right now. People were always saying, "That kid is way to old to be in a stroller" when he was younger, and an old friend of mine bluntly came out with, "Does he have some kind of developmental delay?" I suspect that's what other people think, but are too polite to say. People seem to act relieved when they hear that he's younger than he looks. I feel a bit like I missed out on having a baby with my son. He came out looking like a 14 month old, and just kept growing and growing.

I know exactly what you're going through. My middle child has always been large, he's now 6 ft 4 inches tall and 26 years old, but when he was a child, others gave me the same problems you have.

Yes, I understand what you are going through. My oldest child (I have 3) is very tall for her age and always has been in the top 95% for her height and weight. When she was 9 months old she was wearing 2T. She looked like she was 2 and she was talking like it too. When she was 3 she wore a 6X. She is now 10 and looks 12 or 13. She has boobies, and according to the doctors will be starting her monthly soon. She is 5 Foot 1 inch, and weighs 110lbs. She wears a size 7 in women shoes. If she keeps growing like she is by the time she is 13 she will be taller than me. I am 5'5 and a half. When my daughter was about your sons age, she too would throw fits and I would get people saying rude things to. She was about 32 or 33 months old when I started making her do push ups, sit up and knee benders when she would act out. About a month after starting to disiplincing her that way, stopped all that behavior.

hah well my daughters now where near 3 years old lol but she is big for her age! we just took her to her 4 month appointment. she weighs 17lbs 10oz. and is 26in. well over the 95 percentile for both height and weight! the doc told me that i should cut back a little on her fomula.. but her normal doctor told me not to worry about a babies weight till they are older then a year. so im not worried. shes big. we get comments about how they think shes like 6 months or older.. and i just answer "shes not even 4 months" shes definatly a big girl for her age, and she seems to be developing fast too.

I am not worried about Jonny at all...Im just keeping him active and away from the junk....its just too bad hes a picky eater lol Dont worry about your baby...shes only 4 months old. They are supposed to eat alot and grow alot. Cut back on an infants formula?? WHATEVER!!

my daughter is almost 3 years old and she i quite tall for her age at 40 inches, she is in the 95th percentile for height she doesnt weigh as much though she is smaller boned and slim at 35 pounds but most people mistake her for being atleast 3 or 4 years old, my youngest baby on the other hand is tiny, she is in the 40th percentile for height and 50th for weight. My boyfriend and i are both tall so this is why, his mom is very petite as is my grandmother you might have a football player on your hands though so keep that in mind!

Omg yes I hear this all the time about my daughter shes 22 months old weights about 26 lbs and I don't remember what her height was when we went to the doctors. Anyone who picks her up says she solid. I hear I don't know how you carry her around. Shes big for her age. Shes so tall. Shes is chuncky. Then my mother in law compares her to my neice who is 6 months older then she is. They are in the same size. Well actually now my daughter is in a 2T and she is still in 18 month clothes. I feed my child and I don't smoke around her and I didn't smoke when I was pregnant with her either. My child is healthy. My neices mom didn't eat much while she was pregnant besides the smoking because she didn't want to get too big. And now I'm not positive about this but one day she told me that she was sick and the kids had to find themselves something to eat. She wasn't even 2 yet. So how can you compare?

Mine's the opposite, my daughter is quite short for her age :) She's only 11 months but it seems compared to others the sameage, she's short. My friend in the UK has a daughter who is 5 months younger than mine yet she's currently only about an inch shorter than my daughter in now! It's just weird - i guess her & her hubby are taller & my partner & i are kinda short! It's just weird coz people always try & guess her age & she's older than most of them guess. When i took her to a birthday party, everyone kept commenting on how little & doll like she was & they were all shocked when i told them how old she was, expecting her to be say 6 months instead of 8 (she was 8 months at the time) It's funny though coz when they see her walk & stuff they all get kind of shocked - since she's been walking since she was about 8 1/2 months!
