Do you think that muslim women in Western countries should be allowed to wear the veil in public? Or is it a disrespect to their beliefs?

They should certainly be allowed to wear the veil from a legal standpoint, but unfortunately with the anti-Islamic sentiment that pervades much of Europe and the USA wearing veils could make them easy targets for hate crimes. Nonetheless, it should be allowed and devout Muslims should have the sense to stay away from "redneck" communities.

I think Muslim women should have the right to wear the veil if they want. It doesn't hurt anyone. Why would anyone have a problem with it?

Actually i agree with you as well.I think that they should allowed to wear it since they are not forced to.However, because truth is conservatism is an element of many muslim familes, many times this is imposed to many women without them having the right (because of potential consequences) to react against it.Moreover, do you (all) think that integration, becomes easier? I remember at the Uni i would have a muslim friend (female) however her fellows wouldnt "see"me in the best way.I was the outcast..I mean no offense it is just opinions i would like to gather.Thank you all for your replies!

You know, that's a really tough one. I don't like to think of a woman being forced to do anything, even wear a veil. I think we have to work within their system, though. It's very disrepectful to challenge someone's beliefs and expect them to follow your beliefs. I sure wouldn't like it if it were done to me and you obviously did not appreciate it when your Muslim friends associates would look down on you because you did not wear the veil. I think we have to work to establish a climate where women who do not want to live that way can feel free to break out of it. We have to be accepting of all beliefs. That way, someone who wants to break free of a belief system that is suffocating them will feel more free to do so. It's not something we are going to be able to do overnight - or even in a few years. It's going to take a long time.

It's not disrespect to their beliefs because wearing the veil isn't about their religion. In some Muslim countries, it is illegal to wear the full face veils in public so why should they wear them in Western countries?

wearing veil is islam rules for muslim women. if a woman is muslim, that's her consequency to wear that.it's true in some muslim country, like turkey, the veil is illegal. i think that kind of countries just too westernize and forget about religion rules.
what ever the muslim woman live in, it's a must for them wearing it.
i'm the one of them. i live in japan now, and thankGod, that here we don't have rules to forbid the veil.

well i dont think there's anybody saying muslim women should not wear veil.as long as i am concerned its their right and they should be allowed to put on their veil no matter which profession they have.it would certainly be a disrespect not to allow them wear it

In parts of the USA. I don't agree with the wearing of the veils. Going shopping in a store....men can't walk in the store with their face covered...so why should a man? They can claim discrimination here. Besides that I also think it i for the womens own protection not to wear a veil while shopping. many belive when the face is covered in a shopping area. That the person is goingto rob them.
Other than that. I have no problem with wearing the veil as long as the rules are being followed about head gear where ever these women go.
