May is Mental Health Month. It is celebrated throughout America as to raise mental health awareness. IT is in hopes that people will educate themselves about ways to find help if they think they are suffering from any mental health problems. The week of May 6th through 12th is when mental health groups are recognizing Anxiety and Depression Awareness Week. They are encouraging talk between families and friends concerning anxiety disorder. Talking about anxiety and depression is the first step to getting help. It is often difficult to admit to ourselves let alone our family and friends , for fear that they will judge us and not understand what we are feeling. A good way to prepare to talk to people about depression and anxiety is to start a journal and write our feelings and fears. Sometimes this is a great way to identify those fears ourselves. Don’t expect your family and friends to automatically know what you are feeling or what you need. You must tell them. They cant read your mind. Be specific and help them understand what you are feeling. Remember that anxiety and depression are real. They are serious and they are treatable medical conditions. They are not in your head. Having an anxiety disorder is not a sign of weakness. Remember that recovery requires hard work on the part of the person having the anxiety disorder or depression. Everyone including the person having the problem has to be patient. Results wont happen over night. It may in fact be a slow process, but remember that the rewards are well worth the time it takes to get them. Many experts believe that anxiety disorders are caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors much like other disorders such as diabetes or heart disease. There are several treatment options available to help with the process. Behavior Therapy The patient learns to cope with difficult situations, often through controlled exposure to them. This kind of therapy gives the individual a sense of having control over their life. Cognitive Therapy The patient examines his feelings and learns to separate realistic from unrealistic thoughts. As with Behavior Therapy, the individual is actively involved in his own recovery and has a sense of control Cognitive - Behavior Therapy Many therapists use a combination of Cognitive and Behavior Therapies, this is often referred to as CBT. One of the benefits of these types therapies is that the patient learns recovery skills that are useful for a lifetime. Relaxation Techniques This can help patients develop the ability to more effectively cope with the stresses that contribute to anxiety, as well as with some of the physical symptoms of anxiety. The techniques taught include breathing retraining and exercise. Medication Medication can be very useful in the treatment of anxiety disorders, and it is often used along with one or more of the therapies listed above. Sometimes anti-depressants or anti anxiety medications are used to help with severe symptoms so that other forms of therapy can go forward. Medication is effective for many people and can be either a short term or long term treatment option. This will depend on the individual.

gosh there is so much more to these therapies than this article does justice to. It doesn't really give you a feel for any of them. Of course it could just be me since this is my training I don't know.

What would suggest I do. I have depression and anxiety disorders. My son is bi polar and something else..can't remember right now. We are both on medicine which seems to be slowly helping except...my husband does not believe in mental illness. He also needs anger management. I try to tell him it is a real disease; but he just said it is a bunch of qack money hungry doctors. I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have been seeing a Doctor and a therapist along with medication. It is a serious health problem. You are not alone though. I just did three articles on gather about anxiety/depression and panic attacks. Are you a member of gather? If you are, look up my articles. If you are not, let me know and I will send you an invitation. There are alot of people on gather that have anxiety and depression.

I am glad you brought this up. Some people don't like to talk about it and they should. My mom was depressed for most of my growing up years so I think that is why I fight so hard to not get depressed. I have incredible coping abilities and I think its due to seeing my mom struggle and trying to help her. Many people don't think its "for real" and thats not the way to think. Thanks again for starting this discussion and I hope lots of people take the time to read it.

I think that mental health has gotten a bad rap for years. People seemed to think that it was all in our heads. Now with all the school shootings, they are taking a new look at it. Having mental health problems does not mean we are week or that we are crazy. It is serious medical problem and can be helped with meds just as an infection, diabetes, heart problems and other serious health problems. Mental health is finally getting the attention that it needs.

i have bi polar disorder and think a mental health awareness week is a fantastic idea. I think there is still such a big stigma surrounding all aspects of mental health many of those clearly in need of treatment, never get it. Because many of those who need treatment go a life time without it simply because they do not understand mental health. Thankyou for this helpful and insightful discussion blessed be

I agree with you completely. The entire month of May is Mental Health Awareness. This week is dedicated to depression and anxiety. I hope the discussion will help to get people to understand that it is a real medical problem and not just in their head. Like you, I believe many people put off getting help because they are afraid of what other people will think or say to or about them. It is sad really what stigma will do to us.

I hadn't known about this, not that it was Mental Health Month or that this week was for Anxiety and Depression Awareness. I think it's great that they are doing this but they need to let more know about this so that way they can get information to share with others. Some times just being able to share the information, different facts and view points, can really help. The more people understand about what effects those they care about can make it easier for them to accept and aid them.

Wow, that is so informative. I did actually experienced depression after i gave birth to my child. At some point in our lives,we have experienced anxities and worries which leads to depression when the person could no longer cope up . Yes, it is difficult to admit that you are in that situation as people may not understand you or judge you. Exercising and expressing how you feel about something would help you cope up with life stresses. But visiting a health professional would beof great help

I definitely like the fact that Mental Health is being given attention and hope those who are suffering from these disorders or know someone who is going through hard times, will look for help and learn more about mental health concerns. I did not know May was the month they were doing this for people. I have suffered from depression in the past and needed counseling and medication as well as support from family and friends to get me through it. I still get some anxiety from time to time but do not need medication. I try and spend more time outdoors and keeping myself busy and doing things that i enjoy.

I didn't know that such a week existed, but it is an important topic. I'm glad you posted it. There are so many people who suffer from depression, and so many more who don't believe it is a real illness.

This is a great post. I suffer with depression and anxiety that is very severe at times and my huband doesn't really believe in that sort of stuff. I go to therapy anyway and also take medication, but I know how hard it is for people to deal with on a daily basis. It can really make someones life hard if there's nobody around to listen sometimes.

Thanks for sharing this information. I was unaware that this week existed. It is an important to bring awareness to a topic so badly missunderstood by much of society. You have included some excellent information here. I hope it is found useful to many here.

I am not a doctor here to diagnoise or treat but there are a LOT Of natural health solutions that could prevent many mental health disorders. L-Trytophan builds up seratonin reserves in the brain. ALl it is, is an amino acid that is deficient in most processed food that people eat. 5-HTP is another great amino acid for building seratonin. Raw chocolate beans also have mao inhibitors which also work as an anti-depressant. My favorite brand is sunfood.com cacao. They also contain a lot of trytophan. These are just things that I have found beneficial in my own life !
