Do you have a place in your home just for spiritual practice?

In the old days, rich people often had entire chapels built into their homes. Among some religious groups, home altars and shrines were the norm. I've only been to a couple of modern homes that have such things, and I was wondering if anyone here had a permanent spiritual or ritual space in their home? I don't right now, as I rent an apartment and am sort of short on space. But my dream home that I built in my mind has an entire room just for spiritual purposes, with altars, places to store ritual tools, statues... all sorts of neat things. Every time I look at the real estate websites and things, thinking about what type of house I would buy, I think about if there's a room that would work.

I have a few areas. I have an altar that sits on 3 shelves on the wall where our dining table is. And I have a small corner set asside just for my personal spirital time. But I would love to have an entire room, or better a private garden, just for me.

I want very much to have a place in my very tiny studio apartment for spiritual practice, but my big question is this: where would I put it? I am right now cleaning and arranging everything in this tiny, tiny place to maximize the very limited space. This has really got me to thinking...

It is very hard living in an apartment and having room for such things! Good luck with your cleaning and arranging! =)

Right now, my religous stuff is all mixed in with my other stuff. It's hardly respectful that way. I'm sure that God understands, for now, but I'm trying to find at least SOME place set apart for my religious life. I live in public housing which IN NO WAY is conducive to having a religious life or any sort of spirituality. But, right now, I am disabled and poor, and one of the reasons why I am devoted to my faith is to find a way to rise above this and to even overcome it all. If I had no faith at all, I would REALLY be in sorry shape, believe me! But, some of the people here are VERY anti-religion and VERY anti-spirituality. And, of course, this place is hardly even the right size for a Barbie doll and teeny tiny little Barbie-doll-sized religious accessories. Barbie with her very own altar, Bible, Koran, Torah, you name it? Now THAT'S a thought! LOL! Buddhist Barbie, Muslim Barbie, Christian Barbie, Jewish Barbie, pagan Barbie, Mormon Barbie, Jehovah's Witness Barbie, even a Wiccan (spelling?) Barbie, all to teach kids religious tolerance. I'd make a million, that's for sure! LOL! Ummmm...maybe not...I'm really not into mass-marketed, plastic versions of religion. LOL!

As awful as it sounds, there's only room in my place, really, for miniaturized versions of religious stuff. :-( I am going to have to get creative somehow.

When I was still living in Canada I had a section of my room that was set up with everything but did most stuff outside.....Here in this house i dont have a specially area set up really other than where I meditate and now with the warm weather I'm even doing that outside...One thing thats super nice about the house we bought is the amount of woods we have...so if I want I can just sit on my lawn and do what I need OR i can go down to the firepit (which is common choice for me) OR should I choose I can go out into the woods and find a spot to work out there...

It would be nice to have a lot of land like that! I kind of have a lawn, but since I only really have the top floor of the house, there are people that live downstairs. I have yet to figure out whether doing strange things on the lawn would be a problem considering it's sort of a "shared lawn". That, and my landlady is a really old Christian lady, so I don't really want any questions from her about my reliigous practices. I hope when I do get a place, I have that kind of space for outdoor practice, but I would need a space inside too, since so much of the year it's "frostbite if you're outside for more than five minutes" where I live.

I don't right now, but it would be nice. I'd like to have a room that I could just slip away in and not be bothered. I'd like to have a room for meditation and what not, simply because I can't meditate just anywhere, because something always happens that bothers me. I'd also like to have a room where I could have an altar or a shrine without worrying about a cat or something knocking over any candles that I may have lit at the time. That is my dream, to be able to safely burn candles for long periods of time, safely.

It would just be nice to have a relaxing room for myself too. It'd be nice to be able to say when I'm in this room, do not bother me! lol

I used to be able to meditate anywhere, but since having a child I know I can only meditate when I have someone else watching him. Not only that, but if I'm in the same room with him, even if someone else is watching him, I just can't meditate because I keep getting distracted. =p The burning candles issue is also part of why I would really like to have a room for spiritual practice.

I wish. It'd be lovely to have a place in the house just for worship, prayer, working magick..anything at all which relates in a way to my beliefs. I'd take a closet even! I'm not picky lol. Someday I'll have a room or temple in my house..a shrine at the least. I hope.

I would love to have a space dedicated to my religious practices in my home, but seeing as I still live with my father I can't even have an altar. Once I move out however, I plan on having a space for my religion. Even if it was only temporarily used for that, its better than the nothing that I have now.

I can see how still living with a parent would make it difficult to have room for such things. Right now I have this large open area we just cleared in the living room by unpacking some things, and I'm being very excited by it as ritual space, even though it's also playspace for my son during the day. Still not what I'd like to have once I own a home, but better. =)

*nods* That sounds like a good option for when you can't have a whole room.

I wish I have a room dedicated for spiritual practice but we have limited number of rooms so I just set up a small altar instead. Someday I hope to move into a new house where I can have a room for a bigger altar.

I don't have any specific space set aside for spiritual practice in my home. I have actually never thought about it that much. Maybe I should, it seems like a very good idea.

I have an altar in my bedroom which is good for when I am feeling more meditative. but any actual workings take place outside or in the kitchen, on the whole.

*nods* I can't really do too much outside where I live now, but I would love to be able to. Usually for outside things I go to my friend's places, who have more land. In the kitchen is a good place. I know a lot of people who tend to do their workings there.

Yes I do Lecanis not a big one but a small shelf, where I have pictures and the ritual tools. I have no books yet, I would need a bigger place if I get one! All our ritual texts are mammoth sized and would need a whole lot of space and a teeny tiny shelf is no match for the ritual books. The shelf is permanent ofcourse irrespective of where I live the shelf shall go with me I have always had it and I am not going to let go of it irrespective of where I live, I find it amazing that I have so much place to live in but I have only a little shelf for the God to whom I am thankful for, for all this space he has given to live in. There are also certain places where we are not allowed to place our templesin like where the sunlight does not penetrate at all.... etc etc. So although the space is small yet my heart is not and when I do move into a bigger house I can make a whole lot of space for my spiritual rituals. Thanks for asking and have a good week ahead. :)

It has always been my dream to build a pagan temple in my country. Gods-willing, I might someday :) Right now I'm contented with the saying 'The world is my temple, and my body, the altar' :)

If I ever get the money, I would love to build one too. Or least have a nice grove with an altar, and a small shelter. =) I like that quote!

I have a very religious family. We have our own prayer room, our altar are full of religious statues and we even have a big statue of Mama Mary in our garden. My parents are one of the leaders in our church, so that's why. But now, I lived miles away from home, all I have is the crucifix of Jesus and rosary.

In India we all have a room for worshipping God,which is known as puja Room where we store all the statues, lamps etc...which are used for doing Pujas. Nowadays the becomes smaller and smaller becoz of the modernity of homes. We also don't have enough space for doing pujas in modern Apts.

i keep a corner of our bedroom as an alter and use this space exclusively for my rituals and work. I cant imagine the luxury of a whole room but i do insist on my small corner blessed be

In my sourrunding tradition from Cuba, it is very usual to have something like a personal altar with all kind of methaphysic things someone can find. I don't follow any defined religion but I keep a place where I put my strange things that I relate to different ideas from different traditions whose teachings I agree. But it is not a room, just a small place in a library.

Well I fell wherever you kneel down and pray or sit on your bed or on the couch or wherever your place is to talk to God that is where your altar is. God looks at the heart of man not how elegant or fancy his place of worship may be just as long as you do wordhip Him.
