How often do you get cheated?

I decided to help my girlfriend do the grocery shopping today. We get all the groceries she thinks that she needs for this coming week. We get in to a check out lane and wait for what seems like forever to check out. Finally it is our turn. The cashier starts to ring stuff up. My girlfriend watches as the amount of each item is shown. She tells the cashier that the price on one item rang up wrong. Apparently the sign on the item said clarenced for a dollar a piece but the item rang up for $6.96, the regular price. We finish checking out and leave the store with her scanning through her receipt to make sure everything rang up correctly. She tells me that she finds that alot of times she gets charged full price for a sale items. Do you watch how much you are being charged for things at the store? Have you seen that you get over charged? I am just wondering how often this happens.

I was cashiering one time and I accidentally charged a woman for an extra can of something and she held up the entire line to check and she didn't want to go to the customer service desk to get her money back and I almost cried. Then eventually I got fired, in case that makes anybody feel better. Now I'm too scared to get another job I'll only fail at and my family's getting angrier at me.

Oh Zaffire, honey, how old are you? You are such a very sensitive person. You sound so much like me when I was younger-way younger. This is-in a way-still on the original subject because you are showing the same situation from your side. Please don't let this rule you. I let my sadness and shyness rule me for 45 years-I'm 56 now. It'll rob you; it'll steal your youth..don't allow this to ruin you. Please.... We all make mistakes in our jobs-even when we've been there for a while. We're human after all. Working and supporting oneself is the most rewarding thing in the world-aside from giving birth to a child.

I understand people make honest mistakes. I wouldn't hold up a line of customers to make sure that everything was rang up correctly. While I do admit that I don't like to have to stand in line a second time to correct something I also don't like to hold everyone else up either. Every time you make a mistake you must learn from it and move on. There is no reason to let a small mistake like that hold you back.

Yeah its true it has happen with me so many times. We picked up the stuff from sales aisle but when we go for paying it It charges us full price of that thing. Its sometimes mess up my budget too and i leave the store without getting anything from there. We should be alert while they are ringing us up because so many times it happens we pay more for the things that are on sale.Your girlfriend is smart person I always do check receipt too and we all should for these kind of mistakes.

All the time! I always watch- It drives me crazy when they ring up wrong- I know it isn't the cashiers fault but it is when they get all snippy and don't believe that it is wrong! I just used a self checkout at our grocery store and some flowers I bought rang up at $13.95- They were on sale for $5.95-- I told the lady she said really snotty- Well you probably got the wrong ones- I had to walk over and show her the price- then she was nice-- So stores cheat you all the time- You have to be sure to watch!

Thats terrible how the cashier treated you. Did you go up to customer service to complain? I would have . Anytime one of the cashiers or associates are rudy to me I go up to the service desk to complain. If I happen to get an associate or cashier that goes out of their way to help I will ask for a manager to let them know that they have a great employee as well.

I watch all the time, especially if soemthing is on sale. If i'm not buying anything on sale, then it doesn't really matter and I just apy whatever the price is. One time though I got chargeed for deli ham at 75 dollars a pound and didn't catch until a week later when I had already eaten it. That was insane!

I have seen this happen a number of times when I go shopping. Anymore I check to make sure everything rang up correctly. Wal-Mart use to give you the item for free if it cost less then $3. If the item cost more then you would get an extra $3 off the total price. Wal-Mart had to quit that policy because they were losing alot of money.

Wow I wish they still had that policy. That is where she finds most of the mistakes at.

I never get cheated! Come no, this is non sense! Customers rising their prices just when I am buying the product, just to cheat me? Haha, I won't let that happen. Fortunately, there is a law that says that, if there's a difference between the price in the sign and the price in the computer, the lowest price must be charged. Which means: if something is shown at 2 dollars, and the customer want to charge 5, I'll only pay two.

Right, but what I am saying is do you check your reciept to make sure you were charged the right price? I don't shop to much so I never paid attention. I just assumed I was being charged the price I saw on the sign. My girlfriend said that almost every time she goes to the store she gets over charged on something.

Oh, I understood. Well, I don't search for the prices on the receipt, as I trust in the place where I shop. I make the math in my mind, and then I check with the Total Price. I only check if the Total Price is too different from what I though.

Big super stores are notorious for having the wrong merchandise on the wrong racks. Cause customers get tired of carrying something around and just stick it anywhere. So, the next person that comes up thinks shes getting a pretty good deal on a better item. Maybe like it's a clearance price. That totally happened to me. Anway, I ended up paying clearance price not full price. I know that the store could have insisted that I pay more. But, they really should keep better track of their products. It's not my fault it was on the wrong shelf.

Yes. YOu have to be careful. Always check you receipts. There can be a human error on inputting on the database. Other things to be watched out is that the cashier scans your items twice. I encountered that but I noticed it. I ask the cashier to show me the receipts even I'm not yet finish...and there we saw one item (that costs a lot) was scanned twice. All these things you have to check while shopping and on the grocery. Especially when there's a sale, sometimes their code, system is not yet updated. Check all the receipts and chnage before leaving the cashier.

Thanks for letting me know about being double charged. I guess I am a real novice at shopping. That is a bit of information that is good to know.

LOL, I never thought about getting a mistake in my own favor. I just assume that the item was on some kind of sale and I didn't realize it.

I haven't had this happen, actually - I usually grocery shop at the end of the day, so if any item is improperly scanning, I guess someone else has already told the manager and it has been fixed. At our grocery store, if an item isn't coming up the right amount, you can go to the customer service desk - they'll fix it.

I understand that you can go up to the service desk to get the problem fixed but that usually means standing in another line. My girlfriend normally takes the three children with her when she shopd. While I have to admit they are usually well behaved after a while in the store the get antsy to leave. Standing in line once is bad enough.

In these days of computerized everything, I definitely check the prices of items as they come up on the cashier's display. It used to be that prices has to be physically marked down on the package itself (As a college student, I used to work in a pharmacy and I can remember seeing red sales stickers in my sleep!!). Now, they just program the computer to discount the price via the product's bar code/UPC. So many times, I'll pick up something on sale and it will pass through the register at its original price. I always stop the cashier and explain and have her look into it. I agree with what a few others have said -- some cashiers get visibly annoyed when you stop them from processing your order... but, fact of the matter is, there are times I will buy something specifically because it's on sale and I wouldn't have bought it at its full price. I think it is worth checking your receipt or watching as the items are scanned, if possible, because it saves the headache of having to wait in line at a courtesy counter later to get your money back.

Thats what my girlfriend was saying. There are a number of items that she buys just because she is saving money to buy them at that time. If she isn't going to get the sale price then she doesn't want the item.

I always bring a calculator and add up the stuff as I buy it. If it is off by more then a few cents..I know. and I complain. I wish we could scan the stuff as we throw it in the cart with theprice we knowit to be..would probably save us a ot.

That's a wonderful idea to bring a calculator. My fiancee just adds everything up in her head so she can estimate how much she has spent. Then she watches as they ring the stuff up. At the end she still double checks the receipt just in case.

I'm sure this happens a heck of alot, I too have found times when things haven't gone through the till properly, I do spend time looking at the register to see what is going through and especially on the special offers. The stores must get away with thousands per day in my reckoning.

A fair amount of money in my estimation - probably enough to pay for at least one of their special promotion lines!

Thats what I was thinking. The store must make a killing on mispriced items. People will pick the item up because of the sales price pay for it without realizing that they didn't get the sale price after all. I wonder how much they make this way?

This is the reason why we should always check the receipts. There are 'ripper offers' out there. One time, when I lived in Dallas, TX I went into a grocery store to purchase three items, 1 loaf of french bread, gum, and eggs. The total-should have been something like $2.00...cashier charged me something like $7.00. This was in the days before scanners. I said, "What in the world would cause the price to jump like that?" She said, "The bread." I said, incredulously, "How much is the bread?" She said, "$6.95." I said, "Honey, that is 69 cents." If I hadn't been aware...that bread would have cost me much. I'd still have that bread-for the high price-just to get the cost down...

WoW, I couldn't ever imagine paying $6.95 for a loaf of bread. Thats highway robbery.

I typically keep a pretty close eye on what's going on during checkout-- often the computers haven't been correctly updated to reflect "manager's specials" and things like that, and I really don't have enough money to not what where the pennies are going. Also, I got in the habit when the main grocery chain instituted a policy that "if it rings up wrong, the item is free." They made very few mistakes, but I did catch a few, over the years.

i always got cheated...when i bought a car 3 years ago...it gets into trouble most of the time and when i have it repaired...the folowing day...it is in trouble again ...that always happens until the expenses incurred in the repairs alone is almost twice the selling price of the car...then i had it overhauled but 3 months without trouble, the police came in and impounded the the car...i could not get them to release up until two years later the police has not come up with any findings that would prove that the car's papers has problem...those the big ccheats i have experienced and not to mention that the car's side mirro was stolen in broad daylight and the car was vadlized several times...

If I'm only buying one or two items, I always know more or less how much I'm going to be charged for it. But sometimes, if I have bought a lot of items, it's hard to keep track of how much they charge for me, but I always make sure that they ring up the sale item correctly.

I do watch this as well, I like to get things for the price they are marked down to, not previous prices. I try to go to the self checkout most of the time, i check the reciept self checkout or not. I make sure that i'm paying what the tag says, not what it was marked down from. Its always good to check, because sometimes the cashier can make mistakes.

It is quite unfortunate that this kind of things still happen in recent times. However, i rearly check how much i am being charged because i always feel that there are policies and control measures that are related to such situations. In some few occassions, i find out that i was overcharged and i quickly let the cashierknow about it and the mistake is corrected immediatelly. You can imagine that your girlfriend or even you might have been buying items from stores without knowing that they make mistakes in placing prices on some items or even porposely altered the prices to cheat. I every good society there are some bad eggs. CHEERS
