Yah, I have this habit as well and my mom used to say that it's really bad for my eyes. I am wearing glasses now but I dun think it's because of that, so maybe it's an old wive's tale. There's also another adage about reading books in proper fluorescent lighting and stuff and I was wondering how come nobody's eye sight became bad before the invention of electricity?

everybody in my household reads before they go to sleep. for me its pretty much the only time during a day that i get to sit down and read for a few hours. which i do everynight.
lying down while reading wont hurt your eyes. i suppose it might if you kept the book constantly right up against your face.
the biggest thing that factors into that old wives tale is the lighting im sure.
bad lighting can be detrimental to your eyesight if you are always reading in that type of light.
so even if it is just a little bedside lamp it still needs to be as bright as if you were reading in your living room.
