As an Brit (obviously like Hugh) I find his American accent really believable but what about everyone else?
American's is the accent believable to you? I heard that some of the people who did his audition didn't even realise he wasn't American but that could just be paper talk.

I'm a Brit too and I couldn't believe it the first time I saw "House" - not just because his accent sounded so American but also because he is so attractive in the show! Whoever would have thought that would happen when they watched him in A Bit of Fry and Laurie??

That's funny! I always thought he was the perfect grump, so when House started, he seemed the ideal choice. I just wasn't expecting the American accent. I'm an American, and I seem to watch more British movies than American, so I'm used to British actors doing perfect renditions of other accents. Thank goodness, American actors are getting better at it because in some movies in the past they've been pretty embarrassing.

I think that Hugh does a wonderful job with his American accent. Although I have to say I prefer his natural accent. It is so funny, if you listen closely you can pick up on little things he says that he just has a heck of a time covering his accent. There are just certain words that I think give most a hard time. I can't think of an exact example right this moment.
Another person (not from England) that does an awesome American accent is Colin Farrell. He naturally has a very thick Irish accent. (kinda like when he was in Daredevil but thicker)
If it were up to me, they both would only speak with their normal accents.

I think he has done a great job and I believe he has done great speaking with an american accent and has made it believable if people didn't know better he would pass with flying colors. Alot of actors have had to change their accents to be able to play in movies and television and have done a good job of covering their own accents they had good voice teachers probably and worked really hard at it. Nicole Kidman I thought was american till I heard her in a interview and she had a accent. But what can I say I totally love a actor with a accent and I am sure some woman are right there thinking the same thing that maybe Hugh Laurie should speak using his real british accent cause who doesn't love a man with a accent? I love listening to Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery talk, Hugh Grant and I am sure I would love listening to Hugh Laurie talk using his own accent..

I think his American accent is very believable. I had been watching the show for a few months before I even found out he was British. He's such a great actor.

I had absolutely no idea he was British when I began watching House, or even a few months later... The first time I heard him speak outside the show I was blown away, and I still have trouble believing it. Sometimes I wonder if perhaps his British accent is fake... (Well not really, heh, but he is just very convincing)

Fairly enough he can deliver well the lines in the American accent an d nevertheless you can say he is British.

I think his American accent is pretty good, rather believable. I've heard a lot of people say that they actually wouldn't have guessed that he wasn't American, it's that good. I know he used to do a lot of American accents when he was working with Stephen Fry, he does a few other accents too. He's always been good at it.

Hi sleepy. I think his accent is incredible! It amazes me that he still has a British accent.
Honestly I haven't heard him speak in his "regular" voice. Every time I see him he is playing a part in something.
I so love that show!

I have noticed over the years that the Brits are very good at American accents, especially the southern accent. Then again Meryl Streep can do most any thing.

His American accent is so good that I had forgotten that he was British. I saw in interview with him reagrding the show and I was like "OMG! How could I forget that he was British. Wow, he's really good."
So, I guess that I would believe that when people saw his audition might have assumed that he was american too.

There have been a lot of Brits who play American's on American TV. They talk with a perfect American accent. Many are in parts that have strong dialects here so it may be easier, but Dr Gregory House has a minimal accent (may be because his character is based on someone from an area near where I live) so he doesn't have the local peculiarities that some characters have.
I think he does it great, and because of the intensity of his character, and the snyde remarks and biting sarcasm, it works perfectly.
It is interesting to see Hugh Laurie on talk shows, and hear his real accent. Then to think how he talks on House and pulls of the great acting job he is doing on a great show.
