I have read that when you reach REM sleep, you are in the rest stage that helps heal your body. Do you think you reach that REM sleep? What do you do to assure you will reach that stage? I wake up more tired than when I went to bed so I don't think I'm reaching that stage.

Oh I am quite sure that I reach REM sleep as once I fall asleep I sleep very heavy at some periods of my sleep and when I awake most mornngs I am wide awake and that is how I know I have had a proper sleep. But you certainly sound like you are not getting enough sleep do you sleep late.

It does sound like you get good sleep. No, I don't sleep late. I am up by 6:30 most mornings and hardly ever past 7:30 if I don't have to take the grandkids to school that day. I wake up feeling almost worse than I did when I went to bed, honestly.

I have paid attention to my sleep patterns. I only get about 1-2 hrs of real sleep a night. My brain is the type that stays active even in sleep. Alot of the time I figure out something that has been bothering me in my sleep. Since I have been a little child I'm lucky if I "sleep" 6 hrs a night. Its not really due to anything in particular just thats my pattern. But I don't fight my sleep habits I just live with them. If I need a nap in the day I take one. Its usually not for more than an hour or so so it doesn't mess up my pattern. Tammy

Tammy, I can't even take a nap during the day unless I am sick because it messes up what little sleep I get at night. Thanks for your comments.

I had this happen to me last night. I know I didn't reach REM sleep....I could feel that I was sleeping very lightly...it was werid, like I was on the cusp of really getting rest, but I couldn't quiet get there. I woke up more tired than I was before I went to sleep.
I usually do sleep ok though. Some things that help me are a fan (I need circulating air), and a white noise machine. The white noise machine is key. it creates a constant sound and drowns out any distractions and helps me to relax. Also, try a warm bath before bed to relax yourself.

I think I must sleep that way every night, twilight, because I feel like I have been wrestling with someone all night long. We have a fan blowing and our windows up so I can hear the birds and crickets, and all of nature which I love to hear. I have tried other types of relaxation but I just cannot get to that REM stage. Thanks so much for your comments.

There are two main type of sleep, one REM and other NREM. Rapid-eye-movement is called REM and non-rapid-eye-movement is called non-REM. Each of this eye movement recurs cyclically several times during a normal period of sleep. When our forebrain and midbrain is more active, due to depressed muscle tone, during our sleep period we suffer our rapid eye movement we see dreams. NREM sleep is divided in four stages, the last of which is “good night’s sleep

I have such strange sleeping habits. I never can sleep for more then 3 or 4 hours at a time. I'm not sure I ever reach that stage either. I have heard that it is important to reach the REM. I don't know how you would know. I'm interested in finding out too.

I don't know that I have either, I sleep so light. I hope you keep reading this discussion and maybe there will be helpful hints for you too.
