In my Christian faith I was taught that humanity is "fallen" due to the sin of our first parents, and therefore we are born sinners in need of a redeemer. I'd like to hear from Christians, Catholic and Protestant alike. I want to know what your denomination teaches, and what understanding of original sin is.

As with all other stories in the Bible, the story of the Garden of Eden is a myth that entails a profound human truth. Original sin is men's lazyness, the tendency to take shortcuts (when stealing, I don't have to work, when lying, I don't have to confont an uncomfortable truth, etc.) So Adams's and Eve's sin did not consist in their eating the fruit, but in their unwillingness to confront their creator and say something like "Hey, we don't agree, can you explain that to us", That would have been painful and would have requiered courage, and would therefore have constituted an act of personal growth. But they took the shortcut...

And do you think this "cowardly" act is in any way passed down to us in our basic human nature, so we today are born in a sinful state?

Most definitely. It's what's called enthropy in physics, which at the same time 'proofs' that some higher power is looking after us. Mankind, according to physics, shouldn't really exist, the universe in the process of winding down, water flows always downwards (the way of least resistance). Human Evolution is the other way round, it goes from lower differentiation to higher differentiation. Human lazieness (as embodied by Adam and Eve) is actually the natural order in this universe. But it makes us feel guilty (sinful), and we feel (or at leat should feel) the urge to overcome it.

Because Adam and Eve disobeyed God by partaking of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, they lost the privilege of living in Eden as well as losing immortality or eternal life. The concept of being redeemed is to regain those lost privileges. It's the same as your grandparents or parents losing a million dollars that could have been passed on to you. Anyway, to be redeemed is to regain immortality or eternal life which is to be lived in the light of the loving God.

The original sin is disobeyance. By eating the banned fruit they not only disobeyed God but also lost their Godly likeliness. That first sin is carried forward through the generatioms. that is the original sin.
