Two weeks ago i applied for a job. Later, they called me up and i had a telephonic interview. To my knowledge, i dint answer properly for his questions and i was sure that i wont be selected. But to my surprise, after two days i recieved a call, telling that i have to meet them personally for interview. I prepared very well and i had that interview yesterday. I answered all of his questions and after completing the interview, i was sure that i will get placed. But then i was informed that i am rejected :(
I really got vexed after hearing that. When i did my direct interview so well, i am rejected. But when i dint do well my telephonic interview, i was selected for the next round.
I dint understand the logic behind this. Have you experienced anything like this, where you get things done when you dont expect and undone when expected?

Well, if you would live in my country I'd have the perfect answer for you. But I don't know how things go around in China.
Here's the deal:
The companies are forced by the law to inform the people about their available positions. But there might be some arrangements already made with someone who has someone in a high position inside the company, to get him the job.
You are accepted to the interview, because they are forced to accept you, but you will not get the job, because you "are not supposed to", if you get my point...

Yes, you are right friend. May be that just for the sake of formality they would have conducted this face-to-face interview. Anyway hereafter i should make a point that i get used to these things because there will be many companies like this :(

Hello.mdchennai,i have not had any experience like that before,I think most of the peopl did not do well in the telephone interview, may bet they had asked most of the people they called to for the face to face interview,at that time as everyone had been well prepared and there would be great competition as vacacies should be limited, may be it was also hard for them to choose, you migh be just being unlucky.
Anyway,I am sure you will have a lot of chances later,no worry
GOod luck.

well, that is life... it is so unpredictable... and yes... i have gone through couple of cases like that when i didn't expect anything then i will get it and when i expect something then i won't get it... but all these incidents make me learn new things and make myself become wiser and stronger... this is called life lessons that you won't get it from school... just be patient, don't give up and keep on improving yourself... perseverance, determination and strong will are very important when you are looking for a job... good luck and take care...

Thank you friend. That was great to hear. It has really motivated me. As you said, experience makes us to improve, especially failure makes us to excel. Thanks for this thought :)

Very strange to note that your assumptions in both times changed.I know when we expect things with confidence and loose that we enter into a frustrated state. But dont worry you will get something better than this job.
A similar rejection happened to me while attending the first ever interview after my graduation.
I was referred to attend an interview with a MNC Bank by my friend who was working there.I prepared well and it was the first time i was about to face a interview.I was much confident after my interview session and written test as the senior manager informed me that my performance was good.I was asked to call after 2 days for the status of my placement.I felt happy that am placed with a good job immediately after graduation with a reputed bank.
But to my suprise when i called them ,the manager told me that i was not selected for that post.I asked my friend with much disappointment as to what happened in those 2 days. She told me that the next day a girl attended for the same post but not performed upto the mark but she was a known person to one of the senior staff there and hence she was selected.I was very unhappy with this incident where talent is not given preference rather recommendations works out.

That is what society is. They see that they maintain a good relationship with others at the cost of loosing talent. Even this was my first interview. I wanted to get selected in my first interview and that was my aim too, but unfortunately what we think doesnt happen. Anyway i have to do well the next time :)

Sir
Let me tell you when the luck is with you,its ur day then whatever the crap you are doing it doesn`t matter you will get selected.I remember when a guy whose dress was spoiled on the way by muddy water was selected even after being a bit late for interview he got the job that too with spoiled dress with muddy water.
So its basically luck, fate, destiny etc etc.
That`s what has happened with you ,even when u didnt do phone interview well u got the second round offer but even after doing the in person very well interview you were rejected from the job posting.I hope you understands what I said.Pray for next time

perhaps, in your opinion, you did well. but, for the interviewer there was something missing. perhaps he/she found you overconfident. or he/she found you overqualified for the position, that the salary the company intends to offer may be too small for your qualifications. there are many reasons so just be patient. just go on applying and i'm sure you'll find one for you.

actually i havent been interviewed by phone that i cant relate about it, but there are some instances which not same scenario like yours but kind of same logic events , that it makes me think twice, that is i dont expect too much on anything so that if the result is not going to be favorable in my part i wont be hurt or dismayed on it..

Exactly. Even i feel the same. Expect less and be happy! If we follow this principle then i am sure that no one will feel for anything :)

i faced a same thing recently. I was interviewed by one of the best IT companies. I thought the interview was Ok. even after the interview the person told me that for next round I may have to come down to the job location. But after 20 days they have let me know that i am not selected. I felt very sad. It was one of my dream companies. what to do, my bad luck. But best of luck for u in all your endeavours.

I am sorry you didn't get the job hun, unfortunately I have had quite a lot of experience in being rejected and I know how much it can hurt. I have done telephone interviews and on line interviews, then been called in for a face-to-face interview only to find that a few days later I get the "thanks but no thanks"
Can I suggest you contact the firm and ask them for some feedback on your interviews, perhaps they are willing to let you know the reason why you didn't get the job, then at least you would know.

Yes, i can do this. That is a great idea. I dint even think of it. If i come to know what actually my problem was, then i can easily get over it in the next interview. Thanks for your suggestion :)

Don't worry about it and start applying for another job. Actually, you can always ask "Do you all have someone that you are looking to hire? I don't want to apply and then you say I am not accepted." Many times they will tell you that they do. Then just don't apply for the job. I have experienced that as well, so don't worry. Also, I have experienced when they called me in for an interview and they said I wasn't qualified. I had to send my resume with the application so I was surprised they even called me in for the interview!
Well, due to certain laws, companies are supposed to hold interviews for certain positions so they do what you said. They get people there and then they tell them that they aren't accepted. It is just how some jobs work :(. I wish you the best in your finding another job.

Yes friend, i should follow that. Anyway there is nothing wrong even in what they are doing, because they are forced to do it due to the company laws. Should get used to it!

Yes, it has happened to me before. I didn't sound as if I would go for a face to face interview after a botch up telephone interview. I though I was lucky to have landed a face to face interview. Like yourself, I did all the things right and it went very smooth. But unfortunately, I was not selected. There could be this thing about discrimination. They may like what they hear but not what they see. Colour, race and etc play a major role when applying for jobs in a huge MNCs though they swear by meritocracy.... That's life.... We cannot really brush this issue aside as it is still pervalent in the society!!

Yes and always this is going to be there. Our society is not going to change from these race, colour, etc discrimination.

Actually you are the first I response because I just open myLot account. Also your discussion is the first I read. Anyway, maybe it can be considered as karma. I think you don't need to worry that because you don't know what kind of person they need. That they don't hire you didn't mean you are not good. Telephone interview is always taken up a few part of the whole thing. Even you think you didn't perform well, but maybe the same situation with the others. So the company gave most people's chances for face to face interview. Anyway, don't justify something specially for others' thought by your thinking. Searching for job is indeed a tough process. But we have to face it. Come on! Prepare for next interview.

The only way I can make sense of it is that they had a large number of applicants apply and the phone interview was to select those who would go forward for the normal interview process to save time and hassle.
I'm sorry to hear you didn't get the job, but there's always another opportunity..:)

That's why phone interviews aren't very practical. I'm not sure I'm clear on what you're saying here, but you said you were rejected in your interview, but then selected for the next "round"? What is this a round of? Perhaps they just weren't able to fit you into the first tier, but they're interested in you for the second time around when they're looking for people to hire? I dunno.
