I've noticed that there are many people from many non English speaking countries here and that got me thinking about languages.
How many do yo speak? What are they? Why did you learn them?
Me: English, Deutsch and un petit peu francais. And I just love languages. I like how the words flow together to form sentences and I like the idea of communicating with people in other countries.

As for me , Malayalam one of the vernacular languages is my native tongue. Besides English, I speak Tamil, Kannada and Telugu (all vernaculars). I have working knowledge in Hindi , Polish, Hungarian, German, Bulgarian, Swedish, Icelandic, Norwegian and czech.

I didn't mean that I have a mastery over the languages mentioned. In some, I just have only working knowledge.I am a postgraduate in Linguistics and my academic interest is learning and analyzing languages around the world.

English, Polish, Russian, little German...I can understand a lot from Czech, Slovak and Ukrainian, I can understand little bit from Spanish and Italian, because I used to study Latin...
I finished one week course for Japanese…not much luck for French yet…
I have CD’s with French, Italian and Spanish and probably will speak some in the end of this summer…:)))

I started learning French when I was four years old, in Kindergarten. I took French from then till 5th grade, then again for two years in high school, and for another year and a half in college. Unfortunately, I don't remember most of it, other than the basics (alphabet, numbers, colors, etc.).
I took a year and a half of German, a year of Latin, and a year of Old English. I don't remember much of those at all, just a few words here and there.
The only language I actually speak is English. :)

Hi, I learnt Polish till I was 5. Then English from then on. German for 3 years in my teens. Can speak them all, but English is the best. Probably, because it is the language of the majority of my current communication. It opens up one's mind to see how other cultures think and function. To realise that your way, is not the only way.

The Philippines has a lot of languages - each region has a language and several dialects under it. I know Tagalog and Ilonggo. I learned Ilonggo because our helpers in our house came from provinces that speak that language. Apparently, I also know English - the first language I learned. I also know basic Japanese, enough to at least communicate with a Japanese guy who knows a bit of English.

I love langueges, just what you said, communicating with people from different cultures, and how each language shows a little of the country it is spoken in...
I speak Spanish, wich is my mother tongue, and then I studied in privete institutes as well as in school, english, french, and italian.
Finally, I tried catalan at a catalan cultural center, because my mother was born in Catalunya, Spain...
And now I'm just trying to pick up some German... just for fun!
Where do you live? Where did you learn those languages?

i primarily speak english, but i also speak spanish. it is not that great, but i can get by. i was able to speak it a lot better when i was a little kid. i also have two brothers, but they dont speak spanish, but they can understand what is being said to them. doesnt that seem odd? anyway, the only reason that i was able to speak it was because when i was little, i would spend the weekends with my grandparents, and they only spoke spanish. even though i am not a great speaker, i am doing my best to talk to my 2 sons in spanish also. even if they pick up a few words and phrases, at least they can get an idea of how the language works.
