My daughter is almost 17 and has a part time during the school year and works full time during the summer. My son is 13 and also works. He delivers papers and does yard work. My son loves his job. My daughter hates hers, but realizes that working is part of getting older and she likes the money. lol Do you feel teens should work?

I think it is fine, so long as it does not detract from their schoolwork.

This is a good point as well. School is THE most important thing. Without education everything falls apart.

I agree and where my daughter works they were actually very good about this. They cut her hours once it started interfering. She just got her hours back.

Definitely, it will teach them responsibility and how to budget their money. I worked as a teen and that made me realize I wanted to study so I would have better paying jobs.

Yes, absolutely. Learning about life, the value of money, financial management during the 'formative years' is very valuable. It gives them a chance to grow up and prepares them for the future. Personally, I started delivering papers when I was 13 and have been working ever since. We all hated atleast one job in our lives, and it is good to learn that as well. But there is nothing more satisfying than buying something you really want with the first money you ever earned. I still remember that day.

I think it should be up to teens and their parents whether or not they should work. I'm all for teens working, if they want and if there is a need for them to work, such as car insurance or some other type of large bill that they have created that needs paid. But, if there isn't a need, and they don't want to work, I really don't think they should be forced. I think they should be encouraged as best as possible, and if the parents really think they need a job, I think they should have a long discussion with the teen about getting a job and they should let them know that now is a time for them to get one.

If teens are doing well in school and keeping up with the chores, work should be a requirement. It is for adults! The attitude should be no work, no play. They either are putting ~extra~ effort if struggling in school or chores or putting that effort in work. They need to learn the value of money. They should also be responsible for a household bill or two. Their entire income should not be just 'spending money' because that creates premature affluence. The priorities of a teen should be: 1. School 2. Chores and family 3. Work 4. Social and fun The idle teen is the one who runs into trouble emotionally, criminally, and or physically. Busy teens tend to be safer, less self involved, even if they are disgruntled at times, what teen isn't?

yes i think kids should work. I started doing work when I was 13, yard work, shoveling snow, picking strawberries, things like that. Of course the work can't interfere with getting their school work done!

Sure why shouldn't a teenager work? It instills responsibity in their lives. It makes them feel important also. My daughter got her first job at 15. My son started working when he was 16. They both paid rent when they turned 18 also. Its all part of adulthood and the preperation for this life as an adult. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yes i feel that some teens should work, but just make sure that it does not wear them out so they are tired during school. It is good to hear that they love working and know that you hav to work to make money.

I think its great to have a part time job while at school, if it doesn't intefere with their studies. It shows them responsibility, how to manage money, what is required later on when they take up a full time job, expectations and things like that and it also means they get pocket money to spend on whatever they want without having mom and dad buy it for them!

Yes, I think that teens should work...if they are keeping their grades up in school then I would encourage it...all 3 of my older children worked when they were in High School. My 5 yr. old has a couple of little chores that he is required to do everyday...I feel it is important for them to learn responsibility....he gets up and turns on his fish tank light & feeds his fish; he gives his hamster fresh food & water; he turns off his night light & helps me makes his bed. At night, he picks up his room, takes a bath & brushes his teeth; and turns off his fish tank light. Sorry got off the subject but yes, I think teens should work if they want to and have reasonable grades in school. I do not think they should be able to have a job if they are doing badly in school.

I wouldn't make my kids work but "highly encourage it". I worked at a nursing home and an ice cream shop at age 14 after school and on weekends. During the summer I worked all day and some hours at night too. I did it because I wanted to get out of the house and get money. I don't think i'd REALLY press the issue until after high school, but i'd like to see them do it before that.

I think it would make them be more responsible. They would appreciate more the value of money and would learn to save. They would think twice about spending their own money because they worked hard for it.

yes, i do. i think that the earlier they learn that money does not come easy and learn how to save money the better off they will be in the future!!
