What did you want to be when you "grew up"?

I dreamed of being a whale trainer, hence my love of Seaworld located about 3 hours from where I live. LOL
As I aged and got into high school that dream turned slightly more realistic in that I decided I wanted to go for Marine Biology but I listened to counselors and adults who told me how bad that was. I changed to special education teacher and they did the same. I eventually listened to them all and went for accounting (where the money was, according to the brilliant adults around me), switching after 1 semester of accounting courses that I aced with A+ grades yet felt completely lost. LOL I again listened to the adults and went into computer science. In hindsight I wish I would have gone with 1 of my 2 dream jobs, either marine biology or special education but evidenly God had other plans for me. I'm happy doing what I do now, professional book reviews and living off my "retirement"/disability set up from the bank I worked at. While I'd sell my right arm to feel 100% human again, I accept where I am and have found a way to enjoy life even with the pain. I figure I could be a lot worse off I'm sure!

hockeygal, I swear we were separated at birth LOL I too had my career dreams crushed by teachers who told me that I'd never find a job... and the only job I'd ever wanted was to be a TEACHER myself! (I was the kid that made the neighborhood kids play school all the time -- even on summer vacation). I wanted to teach English, actually. They told me that the only way I'd work in teaching would be to leave home and head to an extremely remote area -- and I was young... I wasn't ready for that. So I got a Business Admin degree instead (in Finance... I absolutely relate to the accounting courses lol).

I always told my mom i wanted to be a dentist when i grew up. I'm not entirely sure why! i can't stand the site of blood and i'm not really a people person! lol.
But i wish i would have stuck with something, i think i can still go back to school once my daughter starts in school. I now want to be an ultrasound technician. I wanna look at babies all day. i loved watching my baby in ultrasound view, lord knows i had enough i can read them pretty well. I had the blck and white ones, not the new weird 3d ones, those are scary arn't they!
I am glad that you have an optimistic view on your life, that right there is a big part of how you feel! my dad was so bitter and his ms progressed really fast.. i think it was because he always surrounded us and himself in negative energy and it just was not good for any of us.

I had wanted to become an actress, a singer, a total performer. But my folks always discouraged me out of it everytime I talk about it. They said I don't have what it takes to become a performer. In fact, I was too shy to even talk to a crowd. After highschool I wanted to become a broadcaster and took up mass communications. But perhaps, the entertainment world and media are not meant for me. I ended up teaching grade schoolers (I never wanted to teach) as my first real job. Then, I ended up working in publications. Maybe this is my destiny.

I used to dream to become like a Mcgyver guy...Like the Mcgyver in the Mcgyver TV series..an old tv series..I love to invent something from a scrap..I just love to watch that tv series...You can even learn how to invent a bomb from the methane gas collected from a swamp area..heh..but pls put in your mind..i'm not that kind of guy who invent a bomb to kill other people...You could use this theory if you're in emergency situation, right...I never tried before, so don't blame me if its never work...heh...

LOL... ok... why can I picture some nut now reading your post, getting a huge balloon and collecting swamp gas to drop on someone? LOL
Don't give up dreaming of inventing! That's how most inventions are discovered, by those that always piddle around and create things at random.

HockeyGal! How funny! I also wanted to be a whale trainer. When I was younger I was obsessed with whales. I used to make my dad buy me these big "coffee table" books about whales that I would read over and over again. Then I also thought about going into Marine Biology, but I'm not that good at science :-)
I also wanted to be a archeologist, or a palentologist and just dig up dinosaur bones. But then once I realized that those job weren't as glamorous as they seemed in the movies, I re-thought that too.
In my undergrad I was a sociology major. I love looking at society and social structures. Now I'm in Human Resources. I like it, but I still think whale trainer would be more fun!

I wanted to be a physician with no greed for wealth and helping the poor suffering lot. But I ended up as an editor of a voluminous academic Encyclopedia.Strange are the ways of destiny . Isn't it ?

When I was young, I was a kid full of dreams. Flying
a plane was mostly what I dreamed of to become someday. After graduating from high school, I went to an aeronautical college far from home. After one year of study to fulfilling my dreams, it abruptly ended when my family business back home went under. I went home, re-focused my entire energy mental and physical in helping my family rebuild our business from scratch and decided there and then to abandon my dreams of flying my own plane. Now, I am happily flying my own business instead of a plane.

Wanted to become a marine biologist at one point in time, but then I also wanted to be a teacher, a lawyer, an architect and what you do now- review books for a living. How'd you get that gig? I've been in love with books since I could read. I didn't think a writing job would pay so well though, so I'm now in law school- a happy compromise :)

i ended up working at a nursinghome. Im ok with it i love the oldies there.

I have had 2 big dreams in my life of what I wanted to be when I grew up. I guess that I'm still growing up because I haven't gotten to wither of them (yet!).
When I was very little I wanted to be a farmer. I wanted to have a massive farm of beef and jersey cattle. The jersey's I would milk and sell their cream. The beef I would run Herefords and sell them for stock and meat. I wanted this because I am a farm girl and this is what I grew up around. I love animals and farming in general. It is such a simple and good honest life.
As I went to school and began the whole learning process I fell in love with Genetic Engineering. I wanted to be an Engineer and all through school I fast tracked my education and groomed it around this life goal. I graduated top of my class for biology, chemistry, science and animal science, etc... I graduated a year earlier than those of my age group so I took a year off to travel. I got busy travelling and learning all kinds of life knowledge that the time of year I was supposed to go to school (with a scholarship) I decided I would rather gain life knowledge and LIVE life. I blew the scholarship off (yes, I know I'm kicking myself now, sometimes). I am glad that I didn't go to school because I would still be in my final years of my degree and ahve amassed so much debt (for schooling) that i would now have to work like crazy to pay it back. But, I kind of wish I had've gone because then I would ahve a career and a wonderful paying job in a field that I love. I wanted to use genetic engineering to cure humans. I know a lot of people don't agree with this but I truly believe in it. Anyways.. I'm getting off topic here and meandering around...(sorry). I do want to have a farm, maybe not so big as I used to want but I would like to have a finger or two in the agricultural sector. Even just to have meat and milk and eggs and potatoes and veggies to put on the table. But I am happy with life and how it is turning out.

When I was younger I always dreamed of being a vet! I loved animals, and swore I'd live a completely 'green' life - I wasn't going to ever have a car, I was planning on getting a horse and riding everywhere! I realized this wasn't practical as I got older, and I soon decided that I no longer wanted to be a vet, as I knew it would upset me too much if I ever couldn't save an animal, being the sensitive soul I am! So now I'm studying English and Philosophy and am planning on becoming a teacher!

I dreamed to be a teacher when I was young. That's a so common dream for almost every girl(in China.).But NOW,I find my ideal job isn't a teacher but a traveller.I want to be a traveller.Money is very important for travelling,so I think I can make a compact with a trendy magazine(Now most magazines would like to post articles on travelling.),then during my travelling,I can write articles and take photoes.I send my articles and photoes to the magazine, the editors post them and give me money,so that I can get money to support my trip.I'm interested in the exotic ambience in foreign countries. That's my dream.
