As cell phones become more and more common, I'm thinking they need them around the age of 13. Not for calling friends and talking. But, in case they need to get ahold of their parents. I know I like my kids having their cell phones when they start driving. I always feel much better knowing I can get a hold of them and that they can get me.

I agree at the age they get their drivers licence, etc around 16 they definitely need a cell phone for communication between parent and teen. I'm thinking 13 might not be bad as they would be going more with friends and their parents and it might be good but most defnitely by the age of 16.

When they're old enough to make money to pay at least the monthly fees. In other words, if adults cannot have them, why should kids? And if they have them in school, the principal or teacher should be in charge and hand over the cellphone if the parents phone on an emergency.

Our schools don't allow them to use the cell phones during class time. They have to turn them off. But, if I have to leave and go someplace, it has been handy to call my son and then he calls me back between classes and he will know what to do after school. I really like being able to stay in contact.

Tricky question,
I have recently broken down for my daughter and allowed her to get a cell phone. However she is almost 13 so I thought it was time. Basically it is only for emergencies and is not to be used at school or with her friends.
