I've been cooking for quite a while but honestly don't know how to boil eggs, I mean I do boil them but I can never seem to get em right, sometimes I under do it and the insides are still soggy. And more often I overdo it and wait till the shells crack to make sure that they are cooked already. So how do we know when an egg is boiled enough? Is there a way to tell? A time frame like cook it for 5 or 10 minutes. or is there a trick? Do you put the eggs when the water is already boiling or put it all in the same time? Will putting salt in the water make the egg more tasty?

I understand your predicament. I had the same problem yesterday. I had to eat 4 egg whites (healthier) and throw away the yolks because my hard boiled eggs came out weird. I checked on the internet on how to cook eggs but I don't seem to succeed everytime. I think the best way I found was to put eggs in a pot and fill it up with water about an inch above. Then boil them for like 45 minutes and let them cool down before I take off the egg shells. Seems to work for me.

Take one egg.
Get water so that egg completely submerges into it.
Keep heat on low level. Add salt.
Boil for 15 minutes till you get the egg bouncing - see it from above it will start jumping in the vessel and mkes nioses! Tahts the time you have to stop heating... but let it jump for 3-4 minutes..and then stop heating.
hope this helps..!

my mother once told me, to differentiate a cooked egg from the one that aren't, use a pair of chopstick!
those that could be picked up by chopsticks are cooked.
buy it or not, try it out;) heh

I usually put the eggs in cold water with some salt (so they wont rack) and then i turn the heat on. When the eggs are boiling I will time them and leave thme in for 5-6 minutes, This was they are perfectly cooked for my taste.

I see I'm in the minority here. I always boil mine for a full 15 minutes. I start with cold water and don't start the timing until they start to boil. My Mother in law only boils for 5 mintues and then lets them sit in the hot water for another 10 minutes. I see there are a lot of variations in cooking time from the responses you have gotten.

it is very simple. i am writing it step by step. you will simply learn by read it.
place the egg in a saucepan and fill it with water that is one inch above it, i mean above the egg.
place them to boil over medium heat first until water begins to boil.
then reduce the heat to low. simmer for two to three minutes for soft boiled eggs and 10-15 minutes for the hard boiled ones.
remove the egg with a spoon or what ever you feel conveinent to carry it out.
put it under running water or cold water.
it is done.

I place my eggs into the pot. Cover them with cold water. Bring them to a full boil set the timer for eight minutes. I turn the heat down to keep the water just at boiling not boiliing over. when the timer rings I take the pot off the heat. I drain the hot water off and recover the eggs with cold water. After about 15 minutes I remove the eggs and either eat them or refrigerate them.

place eggs in a saucepan with enough COLD water to cover completely by 1 inch..bring to a rolling boil over high heat , when water is at a rolling boil PROMPTLY reduce heat to a lower medium boil and cook an additional 10 minutes for a hard boiled egg..
remove from heat and IMMEDIATELY place eggs under ice cold water or in a bowl of ICED water to chill promptly to help yolks stay bright yellow. chill for a few minutes in the cold water until the egg is completely cooled.**NOTE: this is an extremely important step if you want to prevent the greenish "ring" from forming on the surface of the yolk over time.if the egg is not chilled immediately after cooking the unsightly dark greenish ring will eventually appear on the outside of the yolk.
**salt may be added to the water if desired..salt prompts your water to boil faster than unsalted water, its deemed a scientific fact..to salt or not to salt is a personal preference!**
hope this helped!

Hi,I am a chinese girl, in my experience when you can hold a egg still with chopsticks, then it must be well done.
