What is your first memory?

is it something exciting, boring, mundane, what? Mine is apparantly from when i was about 18 months old, my parents don't think its possible that i could remember it but i seem to have most of the details right. My memory is having difficulty breathing and my mum called the doctor who came round and gave me some oxygen (it was an asthma attack), my parents think i must just remember a different event but wierdly i remember that my dad set the fire alarm off as he obviously wasn't paying attention to what he was cooking, aparantly i was distracting him. Anyway i remeber it in perfect detail and according to my parents i was only about 18 months old and everything i remember did happen. What is your first memory

I was about 18 months old and I got hold of a tin of Lyle's Golden Syrup - an OPEN tin at that!! That syrup was everywhere - in my hair, in my ears, up my nose!! My grandparents actually took a photograph of me at the time which I still have. I remember it very clearly though and I also remember being scrubbed with coal tar soap in the tub afterwards as my grandparents tried to get the stuff off me. It took ages!

LOL - I look like a little, fat, sticky pig in it because I'm still trying to cram more into my mouth as they're photographing me! I'll try to work out the mysteries of my scanner and put it in my profile.

LOL i Like that story, you have to get that pic onto your computer and use it as your avatar. I have a similar picture somewheerre but with an entire tub of yoghurt all over my face, i have a spoon in my hand but i clearly hadn't quite worked out how to use it yet

My earliest memory was when I was about 2 months old. I remember laying in my car seat in the back seat of our 1941 Ford on a trip from California to Texas. When I was older I learned that during that trip a bumble bee flew into the car and during my dad's efforts to shoo the bee out and keep it from stinging me he ran off into a deep ditch. No one was hurt and after unhitching the trailer and getting everyone out of the car he drove a couple miles in the ditch until he found a spot to get out. I don't know why I remember that but maybe all the commotion caused the memory to stick in my brain.

i didn't know people were even capable of remembering things that early in their lives. I'm guessing you have been told since that you were travelling from California to Texas (unless you were some sort of super baby)

Yes, I was told about the trip later and that's when I associated it with the memory. Of course, it could be a false memory or a dream. My next earliest memory was of being held by my mother outside of the house we had just bought in Corpus Christi, Texas. After that my mind seemed to go blank for a few years :)

My first memory was when I was about 2 years old. My parents had a party because there were a lot of people in the house and my dad came to my room because I had a nightmare and he picked me up and went downstairs and seeing all those people there I was scared because I couldn't hear I was born deaf I have so many memories but my mom think it's impossible but she knows that I was right but she thinks that maybe someone told me but I told her that I can remember falling down the stair and they rushed me to the hospital at the age of 2.

Hi itsreallymefifty It's a Birth defect and it can not be fixed I had to go to the deaf school and learned to speak and sign languages since I was two, it has nothing to do with my brain there was something that didn't grow was the nerve it was damaged.

myfirst memory that i can actually recall is falling down the stairs after i cut my thumb on my aunts razor. i was about 1. i remember the entire layout of the apartment, the bathroom, down to the red an black shag carpet. mom says there's no way, but i remember, and when i told her about the old man who use to make home made ice cream for the neighborhood kids, she was just amazed.

my first memory is when I was about 2 years old and we had horses at the bottom of my grandparents house. I remember talking to the horse and the horse talking back to me!!! This is a very vivid memory (Im 43 Now) but one that obviously didint happen. So what does that mean?
18 May 07
i think it means that you were a child with a good imagination, either that or 2 year olds can understand horses, maybe we should do some tests

I have many memories but I cannot be sure if they are real memories or things my mother told me happened and I have since visualised. One of the earliest is of me sitting in a pram (I know exactly where in the village we were, too) and of my mother saying "Spit it out! Spit it out!" It was a bumble bee (which, fortunately, don't sting) which had landed on my tongue! Once, when my daughter and I were talking about early memories, she mentioned that she remembered a green room with no windows. That can only have been the room she was born in. I certainly remember very clearly that, when she was delivered, the nurse handed her to me to hold with the words "Good muscle tone, that one!" for she was holding up her head and, apparently intensely interested in this new world. The delivery room was, indeed, somewhere in the bowels of the hospital and was painted all over in a peculiar and rather repulsive green.

That is weird, can people really remember where they were? It can be difficult working out when a memory is from, i have loads of random memories but have no idea where or when they happened, which is really quite annoying

There's something wrong in my memory, sometimes I remember things when I was a three year old but sometimes when I was a five year old. As of now the earliest memory I could remember is when I was only 2-3 year old, the location were at one river in San Luis, Batangas where my mother used to do her laundry.

I use to have nightmares about being up against a triangle and a white dog licking my face. I also had nightmares about a boy swinging a cat up against a house (ours?) and its head popping off and landing beside me. the head turns into the cat from Sybil, if you know that movie. I had this dream until I was in highscholl or after and one day I was talking to my mom and told her about the triangle and dog. She went white and had to sit down. She kept saying I didn't know you even woke up. I finally got the story. When I was 5 months old, she had me all bundled up for the Baltimore winter, and when she stepped on the walk, she fell and dropped me. She broke her tailbone and I kinda rolled over beside a fence. I had heard that story. But the rest I did not know. I landed against a chain-link fence, (the triangle) and the poodle next door came over and was licking on me. I had woke up and remembered, sort of in my dreams. So having solved that mystery, I asked her about the other nightmare I had had. When I was 2-3 a little boy down the road had slung one of our cats against the house and killed it. the head did not pop off of course, but the movie Sybil came out and I watched it much too young,a nd it scared me and i imposed the two together. I never had either of those dreams after I was told what they really were. My mind had answers for the holes and was ready to let go of the fear. My son was 1 when our trailer burnt, actually 1 year and 1 week. When my sister awoke to his screams she knew that something was wrong and got up just as the wall behind him was a blaze, the front door burst into flames as she opened it and they barely got out alive. My son went back on his bottle for about 2 days after that and then was fine. At the age of 4 he was looking at the trailer that we were going to move into and said that is what was hot. i said ,'whay do you mean?' He said the fire, it was like that. I knew what he meant, the trailer reminded him of the fire, and at 23 he still remembers it. Sorry to post such a long response, but I had a lot tosay!

Well there is lot of Memories and we are not sure which one is the oldest or first one. with me I remember as my parents help me to remember but not exactly. I was one or two year old. I used to play in and with sand. gerneraly what i used to do is I sits in the sand and poured sand on my head besides the wall. after some time my Mom searched and called me but i did not reply her. after spent some hour around our house when she was coming back to home than I found at outside of house besides the wall. As she tell me that I have beaten by her.

my first memory was when i was 10 months. you knwo how babies always have pictures of being in the bath tub? that was my memory. i remember my parents setting up the tub, putting water into it etc. then they put me inside. i remember they were holding a camera to take pictures. i remember the baby bath tub was put in their room next to their dresser and the tub was orange. I'm just sitting there looking at them and doing nothing.

thats quite cool, i always think its a shame we can't remember more of when we are little, our parents have all these great memories but we just get blurred glimpses of random events

I was close to two in my first memory where I was laying on the floor in our family room and wanted my dad to see 'Aussenkatchen, gomfrom and noogets". I know what I was referring to gomfrom - is come from? I wanted to know where aussenkatchen came from. I know what noogets are they were a reflection of light through a hanging lamp my parents had in the family room. Aussenkatchen I know was something outside in the night sky, but I could not tell you to this day what exactly I was talking about or needing to know. My parents remember this and said I was around two years old. I remember a lot of other things from that time in my life, sitting in an ant pile and being bitten by fire ants, my mom being pregnant with my brother, etc. Now, ask me what I remember from junior high school and I'm at a loss.

i'm amazed you can remember exact things you said, Its weird how you remember some things, often seemingly mundane, common things like sitting in the living room. I find it odd that i remember my first asthma attack but have no recollection of being rushed to hospital and almost dying at the age of 5 (its very random)

I remember screaming and crying and beating on my parents bedroom door. I don't really remember much else but my parents told me that one night I did that and the whole reason behind it was I wanted to sleep with my high chair. I think I was one or two at the time. My parents couldn't really remember that detail..
18 May 07
interesting, did you want to sleep in your high chair or put your high chair in your bed? either way thats a bit odd
