Do you throw used toilet paper in the toilet bowl or in a wastebasket?

I have been taught to throw used toilet paper into the bowl and just flush it. However, there are times that the toilet paper would cause clogging. So we have decided to just put a small wastebasket in our bathroom where we dispose of used toilet paper. Public toilets in malls here in the Philippines also provide such wastebaskets and have signs asking people to throw their used tissue paper into them. The downside of this is that the tissue paper may overflow the wastebasket and create more of a mess if not disposed of immediately. This is especially true of public toilets. Also, some soilings are grosser than others (I won't go into details anymore), so there's the hygiene issue. What do you do? Do you throw used toilet paper into toilet bowls or wastebaskets? What are your thoughts?

We are different here, ethanmama. I was taught to throw the used toilet tissue in the trash can. My grandmother will be in a hissy fits when she saw toilet tissue in the bowl. I can understand what you are saying about this public toilet thingy. I literally avoid going to crowded mall because I have no patient lining up on queue for my turn to pee. Besides, there are people who don't know how to flush the toilet or shall we say, don't know how to pee properly. There will be lot of tissues on the floor too. You know what I mean.

LOL, ethanmama. I was very surprised by the other responders too. We both live in the same country so we can understand better. I also prefer the 10 bucks toilet. You get to use a nice smelling toilet, good quality tissue paper, lotion and powder.

i've been throwing toilet paper into waste baskets eversince. im afraid for our system to clog and put me into more trouble. i think, its best to dispose the waste even before it piles up.

toilet paper - toilet roll/toilet waste
i throw the used toilet paper into the toilet bowl and then flush it away.Fast and easy but less brilliant as it would cause clogging. However,my toilet bowl never experienced clogging before. My family did it for a long time so it eventually become a habit for us -yes..lazy family..hehe.Wastebasket is for papers and any waste that can found on ground..I don't have a specially wastebasket for the used toilet paper.

Used toilet paper? As in the one you use to clean your er..you-know? Of course they go into the toilet bowl! How disgusting if otherwise. :P If it clogs, it means that toilet bowl mechanism is spoiled... get a plumber to fix it...

Or, the toilet paper may be of inferior quality, so it doesn't degrade easily. :P

If it is in the toilet and for personal use, it goes into the toilet bowl. If it is out of the toilet or elsewhere, it goes into the basket. For my home, we used toilet papers for many purposes other than its original intended use.

OK growing up we put it in the toliet. When I married a man from Guatemala he threw it in the trash. I asked him why and he told me because in his country they did not have flush able toilets so they threw it in the trash. I told him no offence but you live in the United States and we flush it here. I get upset when my kids put it in the trash too I just think it's gross.

So, it's also partly cultural, I guess. I'm thinking also that the quality of the toilet paper may be different too. I've been to the US before and I thought that the toilet paper there was a lot better (and a bit more expensive too) than what we have back home. I personally know of somebody who hardly uses toilet paper at home, but she's one of the cleanest persons I know. What she does is to wash with soap (or feminine wash) and water (or sometimes she showers afterwards) and wipe off with either a towel or tissue paper. I thought that was a good idea if you're just at home.

I throw it into the bowl, I think it's a rather disgusting idea to throw it in a basket and just let it be there.... like doesn't that continue on smelling :S.

I used to do that too, until our toilet clogged with too much tissue paper--and became disgusting too. Now, I "selectively" throw things into the bowl. The "dirtier" tissues go in the bowl for flushing and the "relatively cleaner" ones go in the wastebasket (which, incidentally, also contains our baby's diapers). And we throw out the trash everyday so it doesn't start to smell. And I use the built in bidet for washing first before wiping so that the tissues are just wet with water.

I use the toilet bowl. Though I have heard of people throwing it in a trash basket. That is't for me.

Yes, I think most of us do that. I guess as long as you don't clog up the bowl with too much tissue paper, that would be fine.
