If a cat suddenly stops eating and just cries as if she's being tortured, you might not have to take her to the vet. If you switched brands of cat food, this could be her way of saying, "I don't like this crap. I want the old stuff." Save yourself a vet bill. Switch back to the old stuff.

It could also be indigestion and an upset tummy because she may be allergic to one of the ingrediants. Quite a few cats do have allergic reactions to their food. Stomach upsets are one of the faster reactions and can be severe enough to cause vomiting and diarrhea. Other reactions include: sneezing, coughing, asthma, wheezing, itching, and pulling out their fur along with a lot of other symptoms that you won't even notice.

Thanks. Her behavior didn't change except for the refusal to eat and the crying. I thought she might have a toothache, and she's pretty old. She had rubbed her face against the bag of new food as if she couldn't wait to try it, but it was not her cup of tea.

The smell may have been great; but, the reaction when it got into her mouth and stomach might have been very upsetting.
I have allergies myself and if the concentration of allergen is high enough, my mouth will start to itch and burn after just one or two bites. Then, I make a mad dash for some antihistamines before it gets any farther into my system and causes more severe symptoms.
