since i had discussed how contagious yawning is, i might as well ask how you view persons who don't cover their mouth when they yawn. do you cover your mouth when you yawn? do you find unethical those persons who don't? i got to make an honest confession here. me, i don't cover my mouth when i yawn and i don't really care what other people will say. only SOMETIMES do i cover it and it's when im conscious of the people around. haha. im wondering though how they thought of me yawning with my mouth uncovered. hehe.

Hi rojane. It depends where I am as to whether I cover my mouth or not. When I'm around a lot of people, I tend to cover my mouth, more so I think because I don't really want them to be checking out my fillings, lol!! I think it's worse when I am somewhere and know it's the wrong time to be yawning, so try to stifle it. Ever tried not to yawn, when you really have to?...

so you don't want 'em to see your dentures, eh? haha. about your question, i had been in that situation but no, i haven't tried to stifle it. it's so damn hard not to yawn when i really have to, right? i just don't yawn obviously. i would put up an act like picking up something from the floor and then i would take that opportunity to yawn so they will not see me. haha. sometimes, it takes a little good acting. hehe. try it too or if you want, you can make your own act. ;)

Ha, I reckon I could probably pull off a stunt or two to hide a yawn. Probably better then screwing up my face trying to keep a yawn in. Real pleasant sight, lol!!

i cover it. guess it has been a habit. my mouth is too big if i dont cover it and i scared if i dont cover it, something might drop inside. and it looks ugly when u dont cover it as well. if your mouth too big, u might be mistaken as a hippo.

yawning is not contagious in the sense that you will get germs from yawning like spreading a cold, but it is contagious in that other people might just do it too because they saw you do it. No I don't cover my mouth at home or with friends, but if I am in a place where it would be considered rude, yes I would. For example if I am listening to a lecture and start yawning the poor speaker might think he or she is boring or I am totally uninterested and that would be rude.

hi winterose! for clarity, i'm pertaining with the second case about yawning being contagious coz people tend to do it too when they see somebody did it. and not the first case that you mentioned. :) yeah, being in a place where yawning without covering your mouth would be considered rude is one of my "SOMETIMES". ;)

Well, i cover my mouth when i yawn. It has become a habit since i was young. No matter where am i , many people around or i myself alone, i will still cover my mouth when i yawn. I think it's a basic courtesy and good habit to do it.

I try and cover my mouth.I always figure that people don't want to see what's in my mouth anymore than I want to see what in theirs.

For me it has become a habit to cover my mouth when i yawn! Even if i am alone i do this, but not everytime i yawn. I cover my mouth because i like people to guess if i still have my tonsils or not! LOL! Some people yawn and their whole face dissappears! LOL! Take care Rojane.

You are right - yawning is really contagious. I, for the most part, cover my mouth when i yawn. But there are a few times (like when I wake up in the morn) that i yawn without covering my mouth. Im alone at that time so I dont have to bother about what people think. But yeah I guess it is good manners to always cover our mouth when yawning - plus if you yawn outdoors and dont cover a fly might get in :)

guess im just so unmannerly. hehe. and im more worried about the possibility of a fly getting in (haha!) than what other people think. :) but on the other hand, i think i'll practice the habit of covering my mouth when i yawn. so there would be no turn-off factor. haha! just kiddin'. :)

Yes, I do cover my mouth. But I am not always successful Sometimes, I forget to do so. sometimes, my hands are busy and the damn yawn came without much warning! But it is good to cover and turn your face away, if possible. covering you face is also safe for you: what if there are flying insects around? If you cover your face, you can be safe from these tiny creatures who may enter your mouth.

you're dang right! think i should start the habit of covering my mouth when i yawn. i don't want no flying insects to land in my mouth! that's sooo gross! hahaha.

I do cover my mouth when i yawn, but sometimes i don't. I see to it that I will cover my mouth when I'm in a public places when some people sorounds me. I think it's a proper etiquette to cover it because when i see someone yawning and i see a big mouth..it makes my mind think that is she/he conscious that someone saw her/him with a big mouth? But if I'm in our house, sometimes I do yawn with a big mouth without covering it...hehehe.. It's a great feeling yawning with a big mouth, do try it. It's relaxing and feeling sleepy...

you sure are right! i love the feeling of yawning deeply while strecthing out your arms. i feel so free doing it...although not in a publice place. only when im in the house or when im in my working area here in the office. hehe. feels so goooood!!!!

I try to cover my mouth when I yawn when there are other people around. I find that I yawn quite a lot at work though and my hands are busy and dirty so I don't always. I think it is more from lack of fresh air than boredom that I yawn there though. I think the people I work with mostly are used to it. It is difficult to stifle it but they don't seem to 'catch' it.

hello there. it's definitely not because of boredom. but it's because that it has something to do with our inner system. i also often yawn in the office. maybe because im so busy and i don't have time to inhale deeply and get a good inhalation. hahaha. what a logic!!!! :D

Depending where I am. I will cover it if I'm with the crowd. But I don't have to do so if I'm alone or just at the house.

I always cover my mouth when I yawn, particularly around other people, it's manners and it's a habit. I can't stand when people don't cover their mouths...I don't want your germs. D= I also don't like how some people make sounds when they yawn. It's unnecessary and it's rude.

Not really. I don't see the point anyway. The breath smell can go around the mouth and escape to the outside anyway. But when i'm on my own, I yawn with my mouth open and uncovered.

I cover my mouth when I yawn, I don't really find it unethical not to do so but it just isn't that great of a sight to be honest. If I'd wanted to see stuff like that I would have become a dentist.

Alone or among family members and closest friends I do not have to worry about covering my mouth when I yawn. It feels better when you yawn and your mouth is wide open :0) In public places or in a function like attending seminars, meetings, worship services, in a public transportaion, restaurants, ---I cover my mouth so as not to offend the speaker and to show proper decorum in public :)
