I have never heard that these sports drinks are bad to our kidneys, I hope that is false. I don't drink them, but during football season, that is all my boys drink. The coaches recommend that they drink only gatorade during the training and football season. They then continue to drink it for wrestling and basketball seasons. I hope I am not killing their kidneys.

As others have mentioned, you shouldn't drink sports drinks unless you are actually working out. That doesn't mean a half-hour moderate paced walk, it means when you are training heavily (the football team is a good example) or participating in competition. So if you are a professional athlete, go ahead and drink them. Otherwise, stick with water. Most people drink too much or too little liquids during exersice. Essentially, the only difference between sports drinks and water is that the drinks have - as mentioned - sugar and coloring agents added to them. Some sports drinks boast trace amounts of minerals/vitamins and electrolytes. Essentially, you are better off if you drink a lot of water and eat half an energy bar. I recommend Luna, Cliff or others which contain natural ingredients rather than the artificial madness of PowerBar and the like. A simple apple will replenish sugars. According to the American College of Sports and Medicine you may benefit from a sports drink containing carbohydrates (less than 8%) if you exersice at a high intensity for an hour or more. I don't drink them-I'm not an athlete. If you are losing electrolytes as well as fluids (sweating heavily, or sometimes with an intestinal illness) it's important to replace the electrolytes. Replacing only the water can cause hyponatremia (water intoxication).

I don't think sports drinks have any ingredients that is bad for our kidneys. If it does. Ask FDA to stop it to the market.

No I never drink anything like that, I don't like it... I don't think it's bad for you if you use it while working out, however they may be bad for you if you just drink them because you are thirsty.

I've never heard of them being bad for specific body parts. I do know that I've been told by trainers at the gym in conversation that if you drink them without working out, they can have an adverse effect because they are essentially pumping energy into your system, and if it remains unused it can build up in your system. I don't know exactly what happens, but I think they say it can actually give your body too much work to do without burning the energy.
I drink them all the time, so I really hope not. I don't put too much into studies unless there is concrete evidence, because it seems like studies come out all the time that say everything in the world is bad for you, one way or another.
