Coins That Lie On The Road, Do We Have The Heart To Pick Them Up?

I have noticed that coins lying on our streets, the small denomination ones, are just allowed by us to be lying there forever. Perhaps it is high time for us to take pity on them as to pick them up. They are still of value if collected. Before, the elders will not pick them up because, children will always be happy to find one which can be used to buy a piece of candy, this no longer holds true nowadays. What are your thoughts on this?

If I happen to see coins I do pick them up and put it in my car compartment. They are useful for paying parking tickets. These coins can also be added to the piggy bank. Your'll be surprised when you break the piggy bank at the end of the year that it can help you to buy extra x'mas presents.

this is a great idea zandi. aside from being useful to pay for parking tickets, the amount that they will come up to after sometime, can indeed be used to buy some presents.

what you are saying here is very sensible. it will really endanger the lives of children to be running for those coins on the street.

you are a great man for applied mathematics. yes, we should apply in actuality what we have learned in school.

You know my mum always use to say to us when we were young, "if you see a penny pick it up, then all day you have good luck" LOL I don't know if I ever did but when I do see a penny i pick it up (if I can get to it LOL).

yes, i know that this is a common saying in the US. i can still remember that song of the cascades which talked about it. it started with the line 'got an angel on my shoulder, got a penny'...

oh, if only everyone will be like you, it will make a lot of difference. lately, some people in government made this appeal on tv because, coins are becoming rarer and rarer in our country.

Why not? God is sending you money. I will pick it up if it is not too dirty (lol) and if no one is looking (I am shy). :P

you are right again on this one, lordwarwizard. but don't be too shy to pick up a coin next time. it needs you to get it out from its pitiable condition. it has been rendered useless for having fallen from someone else's purse and care.

I always pick up coins I find lying on the streets, unless they are in the middle of the road and I risk being run over. I think most people are ashamed to do this, some are just too lazy to bend, and some just cannot be bothered.

it will be good to pick up these coins. i used to be ashamed to do it since i know that kids will want to have them. but now that no one hardly cares to pick them up, i have told my kids that we must take some effort at picking them up if we find any of them lying on the road. you are right that, we must not risk our lives by picking up those which are already at the middle of the road. those we chance at the sidestreets, the shoulders and at the curb are safe for us to pick them up.

i still do pick them up when i see them lying on the street.one for luck and the second one is to put it in my coin box in my car.it would pay for my parking fee, ain't that luck!if i saw these 5 centavo,10 centavo or even i centavo coin , i would surely pick them up because that would be very useful in paying my water and electric bill!

this is good thinking in terms of savings. these small denomination coins can still help us in the small amounts at the tail ends of our bills. in fact, including those items we buy in the supermarkets where tail ends like 15 centavos can be easily covered by these coins.

i agree with you that money is money. we should have the heart to regard each one as such, something which is of value.

whenever i see coins in the streets i pick them up because i consider them blessings from above. no matter how small the value is, i still consider it worthy of because there could never be a peso without a 1 or 5 centavo coin. these coins could be collected for future use. you may need them for payment of services like photocopying, buying retail products, giving alms, donations to fund raising organizations, car washing, and for children who sing carols during christmas time.

I remember a sort of a story told by a priest during homily: he borrowed a five hundred peso bill and crumpled it. Then he threw it on the ground, stepped on it and crushed it under his feet. Then he picked it up and asked the people: who among you want this 500 peso bill? Of course everybody raised their hand. It is still worth 500 even after being soiled and stepped on and almost destroyed.
He then explained that the same thing happens to us in our relationship with God. God will still accept us even as we appear trampled upon, dirty, poor and torn apart. God looks upon our value as a person, what is in our nature, and not upon our physical attributes.
Now going back to your point, well I just thought the above story illustrates what we think of appearances. I mean, between us adults and them, children.
Like you said, children will always be happy to find a coin because for them, this represents something else, a goody to be had in exchange for this coin.
For us adults, that coin is simply, well a coin, that represents nothing more than a mere drop in the ocean. In the vast vault of wisdom we adults have, the coin is worthless because we need millions of them in order for it to make a difference and we don't have the patience to look for a million others.
A child doesn't need those millions. He sees one and he knows it can satisfy, albeit temporarily, his needs for the moment. And that is the reason he is happy just with one. As for adults, we will never be happy because by nature, we need more and thus seek more, and being frustrated by not finding more, we become unhappy.

yes, your philosophy and logic on this regard are all perfect. as for us adults picking up coins, let us be happy about having picked one rather than look for more. it is in being a child that we can find contentment in life and, it is by having contentment that we can find happiness. so they say, unless we will see the world through the eyes of a child, we can never find real happiness in this life.

Um, I'm not sure it's a question of "heart" to notice a small, dirty penny on the sidewalk and pick it up. It's a matter of chance to notice it and stress to expend the effort to bend down and pick it up.

i say that it is a matter of heart nowadays because, even the little children who sees them will no longer pick them up. these young ones already know that these small denomination coins can no longer buy them anything anymore. and you are right, about adults not picking them up either because, it will be taking so much effort to pick up something which is of no value.

i am sure that you are in for a big surprise if you will get to count how much you have collected every year. if you will do the counting after 18 years, you might not even consider anymore going through it. there will be too many to count. so you'd better plan ahead as to how best to deal with it. i like your target at collecting those coins for a child. maybe there are kiddie accounts some banks, in your area, are having.

I do tend to pick the pennies up and given them a good home. They go into my savings bottle and it's amazing how fast the amount can add up.

yes, they just very easily increase in population if we never tire of picking them up. funny how people complain about how difficult life is yet, they do not pick up the coins that roll away from them. i have even heard that there are some oldies who throw away their coins below 25 centavos, here in the philippines, because they say that they cannot buy anything anymore. perhaps they have already stopped the practice after the government appealed to the public to keep them and use them.

I pick up any penny, nickle or dime I find. They all go in my change jar and every so often I take it to this machine called Coinstar.Believe it or not....but this last time I got nearly $58 just from saving my change.A penny may not seem like much....but it adds up.

it is true that we will not notice it, that the container, where we collect these coins, will be filled to the brim after sometime. wow, $58, that is some money.

piece by piece of coins picked up from the road will still give you value. When collected, try to exchange it in the bank and the latter will accept it.

the bank will surely be happy to have them. i know that the banks are having problems coping with the demands for coins by the business sector. the market vendors and the malls need these change/coins very badly.

most of us feel ashame to pick up coins when there are others who can see us. don't be, we are not stealing anything from anyone. it belongs to the one who picks it up. before you, there were a lot others who didn't bother to pick it up. if people will notice that there are those who pick up coins shamelessly, others will do the same in the future.

this is true. and when you come across one which is already an old coin, that is something which is of real good value.
