What would happen if a large comet hit the earth?

it depends on the size but if it is big enough there would probably not be a lot of people surviving because it would likely raise such a thick cloud of dust and particles that the sun rays would be unable to reach through for several years If it is even bigger it coul djust completly destry the Earth ... I don't think there is really something we could do ...

They say..Ken..there is a comet heading ou way..Have you heard of this..? I have never seen the movie "Deep Impact" I think if a comet hit the earth, the amount of damage would depend on what size it was and the speed with which it hit the earth.. I would suppose it would start the earth ablaze;)+

I think I wonder more about whether or not the government would even tell us if a comet were about to strike. What mass panic there would be. I think folks in the country would fair better than those in cities. I would not want to be around for this type of event.

I don't know if I have seen Deep Impact...I have seen a couple that deal with this type of situation though. There is evidence that the earth has already been hit by a large comet...there was a discussion with a link to a news article a little while ago...and I remember reading of a couple of big meteor craters from a long time ago. I think any emergency plan similar to a nuclear war emergency would work so the US should have some in place. There is no doubt that it could happen, aren't we just a big target for anything like that anyway? There have been several near misses...it's really kind of a matter of numbers, and of time. Sooner or later it is bound to happen, and if it does, it could trigger a sudden climactic change and plunge us into a new ice age in a very short time.

Hi,K! I don't think our gorvernment has plan if a comet were to hit.There big thing is to leave it to someone else to worry about.it's always possible to be hit by a comet but I don't think it would happen in our life time

Wow that would be cool! I guess it means most if not everyone here will die! Maybe the cockroaches will be spared so we will have cockroaches ruling Earth! AWESOME. ;-)

i have seen this movie years ago. and i am not sure if this one can really happen in real life. but nothing is impossible anymore, right? things can happen in a matter of minutes and we are left in amazement or in awe wondering how did it happen after all... i think these movies were base on facts. though they just envisioned this in the future. but basically, there's a possibility for such events to happen... let me just add... it's so scary!

I didn't see the movie. However, anything is possible. I suppose if one did hit, it would depend where it hit, and the size of it, as to how much damage it would create.

I think there is a possibility of it happening. Those movies are made so real and it is hard not to believe in them. I just hope there are emergency plans somewhere because I don't think I want to die young just yet.

Ya know... there are some things in life we just can't change. I suppose this would be one of them. I say live life like the comet's coming and enjoy it now. And don't fret about things you cannot change.

Yes I've seen the movie and a thought occurred to me whether it is going to be the same situation if a comet that huge really hits earth. I hope not and I hope that our scientist can figure a way to avoid this from happening. Nowadays we have been studying about a new planet which is quite the same as the earth, and maybe in the future we can live there, who knows? Then we would have a choice if the comet really hits earth.

It will be possible, kgwat70. But what size of a large comet are you talking about? If it is very big (i.e., an Earth-size or bigger than earth), our earth will be a serious trouble. That's why astronomers should pay attention to large comets. Before coming to the Earth, we can shoot it on the outer space. But we need to make sure that the debris won't get a huge impact to the Earth.

Nothing except that departing from this earth would be such a massive affair with so many traffic jams up out there. I wonder if God has made prior preparations for all departing at the same time, travelling together, and reaching together. Out there, belive me it could be lot of fun. No need for internet there. We could discuss, ask and answer directly!.
