CUTTY SARK devastated by fire, arson suspected. Why do people do this?

This wonderful old historic tea clipper was devastated by fire this morning at Greenwich. The damage looks dreadful, and a lot of the original timbers and craftwork has suffered. What a sad sight, the last of the tea clippers and the only one preserved for posterity, could well have been victim of an arson attack.
What makes people do this kind of thing? Why do some people feel the need to set fire to such a lovely old ship? I don't understand, what motivates people to acts of criminal damage, any ideas people?http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6675381.stm

I think the that ship WAS one of the ships that came here back in the Tall Ships event back in 1976 to celebrate the 2oo anniversary of America's Independence--I was there photographing that day

It seems they are in the middle of restoring it and had millions of lottery money to make a cafe etc underneath the ship itself. About 50% of it had been removed for restoration so that is saved and they say they can rebuild it but of course it won't then be the original. I can't understand anyone doing this as it seems so pointless.

No, you are right, it will never be the same again. So much of the original material has been lost due to the fire, and it will take so much longer to restore to something like it's former glory.

That's terrible! I remember a number of years back when they filmed a Doctor Who bit in the area around the Cutty Sark. I also remember seeing it when my family when in 1968. Hanging is too good for criminals like that & Britian doesn't even have capital punishment any more.

It's looking more and more like arson according to this evenings's news. I can't believe anyone would do this deliberately, rotten swines.

One good bit of news is that the sails had been removed before this or the whole thing would probably have burnt! I can not comprehend why people would do something like this - it is a mystery to me as are so many things that people do these days like calling the emergency services on false reports to attack them or happy slapping! Hopefully these people will see how awful their actions are and turn their lives around!

I used to be a fairly optimistic person but I wonder if these idiots will ever change their ways, as it seems more and more prevelant these days. What have they achieved with their antics other than upsetting a lot of people and causing so much damage.

That is really sad. Historical stuffs and artifacts are the only thing that teach us about our past and destroying that would cause us to not know our own history. what could be worse that that? Some people just have too much free time in their lives and they should be burnt as well.

Goth, when I saw this on the late news last night I wanted to cry. I have no idea why anyone would do this stupid act of vandalism - I wish I could get my hands on them. Greenwich was one of my fav parts of London and it sure won't be the same without the Cutty Sark there that's for sure.
It makes me so sad to think that this last remaining tea clipper is now gone.

Greenwich has such a historic maritime tradition that I could never imagine the place without the Cutty Sark. I used to spend hours there as a child, I took my own son there and also spent some wonderful hours their with friends. It is heartbreaking to see the pictures in the news now, just a blackened hulk.

I actually saw a documentary on this ship early last week. Apparently it was a brilliant ship and together with her captain and crew was making journeys in record time at the end of her days. Luckily, a lot of the bits and pieces had been removed to be restored elsewhere so it's not the total loss it appears to be in the pictures of this burned out hull.
For a person or people to destroy this truly marvellous piece of history has me dumfounded. Some brainless, uncivilised cretin obviously. They obviously have no standards or values or brains. You may well ask why do people murder, hurt children, rape, steal etc. These people lack fundamental human decency. They are evil.

That just about says it all hun. The ship was unique in that it was the last and only one remaining preserved and original, to see it destroyed is heartbreaking.

Yes I feel sad because it's a landmark and we have happy memories of being in London with our chidren and photographing them in front of the Cutty Sark.
Besides that: woth all the interest in caribbean pirates and such going on at the moment we need to see tall ships so that we can have some idea of seafaring in ancient times.

I heard about that one.
And I"m with you, I just can't understand the motivation behind something like this.
A beautiful old ship , something that can connect us with the past , what is gained by doing such thing? I feel all is lost, and nothing gained.

I guess I will never really understand this hun, and although some of the pieces of the ship had been removed for restoration, if they do manage to rebuild, the ship will never be the same again. Thanks for your words

I hope it wasn't arson as that isn't certain yet it would be sad if it is maybe it's some kind of insurance job?
Apparently the ship was dismantled as part of it's restoration so some of it is OK as it was elsewhere when it caught fire including the figure head, so it might just be new work that has been lost. Lets hope not too much of the original ship is lost and it will be salvageable.

I remember spending many happy hours on board the Cutty Sark as a child, my parents used to take me there on Sundays as a day out. It looks like the mid decks have gone and a lot of the original wrought ironwork frame has been damaged, the news footage looks pretty bad :-(

I'm really sad to hear that happened. The Cutty Sark was a wonderful piece of history, and now due to mindless vandalism it has been destroyed. I always wonder what motivates people to do this kind of thing, and I can only thing of a couple of reasons..
Either the person in question is mentally disturbed, or wish attention upon themselves and take it to extreme lengths, or at least that would be my guess.
I really hope this was just an accident and not arson, but its unlikely.

I saw the film on the news this morning, it was a dreadful sight. I just can't figure out the mentality of some people, and like you I hope this was just a dreadful accident but the suspicion of arson seems very strong.

No! I don't understand it either. Why would people find it fun to destroy a piece of history?
We have thatched roof buildings arond here and at certain times of the year people deliberately set of fireworks and aim for the cottages. It is a nighmare time of year for the owners trying to keep their homes safe.
I just don't get it at all.

Crikey if a thatched building catches fire the whole lot goes so fast, it's lethal. Much as I love the idea of living in a thatched cottage somewhere, the risk of fire puts me off. These people never seem to be caught either, they think they can set a match to something and have a good laugh and get away completely free. Thanks for your comment, hun appreciate it
