I have to rant about the gas prices!

This morning gas is $3.09 here in our small town! I am so tired of this. I drive all day for my day job and this cuts into my pay. Price gouging is supposed to be against the law, right? Well, it's gouging me! Just because Memorial Day weekend is coming up, they are increasing it even more. It's supposed to be up to $3.50 this weekend and $4.00 by summer. And what can we do? Nothing! Nada! I can't see any reason for gas to be so high except to make someone else's pocket fat.

Having lived half my life in Europe, these prices don't shock me in the least. The reason gas has been so cheap here is because of government subsidies and low taxes. There is an easy solution (or a handful of them), but most American's don't want to hear it. Get a smaller, more gas efficient car - this should be out of environmental concern, even if gas prices were lower. Hop on a bike, bus, or walk. Move to an area or get a new job so that you can live and work close to each other instead of commuting long distances. Carpool, vanpool. I moved into downtown close to where I work, so that I can walk to work instead of drive. If it rains, I use the bus sometimes. Sometimes I bike when I feel like it, because it's faster. I bike to the grocery store, because my preferred store is only 10 minutes away on the bike. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound self-righteous here. I just want to point out that there are things you can do about it. You may even be able to convert your car to biodiesel if there is a viable supplier nearby (there is where I live, but this is a rather progressive minded town). Unfortunately so many people are stuck paying off their gigantic SUV or an inflated mortgage on the house, or simply don't want to have to give up a certain way of life. I wish everyone the best in a world that needs to be moving away from a dependency on oil.

You have great ideas but moving for some people is out of the question. Many people cannot afford to just pack up and move. Even if, in the long run it would benefit them they wouldn't be able to front the necessary money involved. Or they like the schools their children go to. Public transportation in our area is heinous. It is unreliable and doesn't take you far. My boyfriend works 20 minutes south of where we live. There are no buses that go remotely near his work. There is no one that lives close enough to him that anyone would be willing to go out of their way to get here or for him to get there for car pooling. OT at his work is variable so he wouldn't be able to rely on anyone anyway. Getting a new job is out of the question because there are only a few places like his in the area and he is getting paid very well. Plus he works first shift which he won't likely get anywhere else he goes. We worked hard to get him on first! He has tried to find a place closer but there are a lot of people trying to get the same positions that are willing to be paid less and work other shifts. We would love to buy a smaller car but we have two and neither is paid off. We need both because he works and I need to get to doctor appointments, school and other places that aren't anywhere near walking distance or PT. Unfortunately for vehicle sake we are expecting another child (our third) and need something with a third row (we are hoping for van) otherwise we will be driving TWO cars everywhere. We have to wait until we have $3000 so that we can do that. As for grocery shopping- I wish I could walk there but with two kids and buying in bulk it just wouldn't work. And the fact that my store of choice is about 3-5 minutes away but not walkable. The closest store is badly run, dirty and overall not fun to shop in. I go there to buy things that couldn't have been touched by any of the employees. You don't know how much i wish I could do all of the things you suggest but most of just doesn't work for many people.

I'm finding since posting this that our prices aren't bad as other areas and you are right about the big SUVs and finding alternative transportation. Great response and gives us something to think about.

Ours is up to 3.29 now and headed up more for the holiday weekend. I am so tired of this I could scream. It seems like everything is going up outragously but the pay at the jobs is at a standstill.

I can't strike. I have about 600 customers that depend on me. But that is a good idea for some. Thanks!

I am in Maryland and it is $3.05 for the cheap stuff here. It is a shame that our elected official are sitting on their hands on this. They had on the new today how all the oil companies have made millions in profits for the past three years. This is because there is no regulation on these companies to stop them from gauging the public. My husband has to buy gas because he works so far away from home we are in a hurt. Instead of protesting the little guy that owns the gas station boy cot elections. Maybe if there were no government officials sitting on their high horse we would not be over taxed, over worked, underpaid, and guaged at every turn.

Hey, hey. Great response. I ranted today on my blog and some guy left a comment on how no one forced us into a lifestyle that require a car. I think my little rant made him angry. I started to delete the comment, but what the heck, right? Everyone has an opinion. Thanks so much for your comment and support! Hope the prices will come down for all of us!

I paid $3.15 for regular yesterday. This was at our local "chain" gas station that usually isn't the cheapest but isn't the most expensive either. The one right by my house is just your typical small town, country store gas station and I don't even want to know how much they are charging today. Since we're close the the PA/NY border (and it's the last gas station on the road before crossing into NY) they usually charge somewhere between the prices for both states. A few days ago their sign read $3.16 for regular and $3.39 for super. This is the thing that I don't get about it..."They" tell us that the price goes up because of supply and demand issues. Starting with Memorial Day weekend the demand is higher so there is less supply and therefore prices have to go up. BUT we all know there is a higher demand. We all can predict this every year. So what is so hard about planning ahead so there is enough reserve to keep prices constant year round?

$3.09 would be a blessing where I'm at. I have$3.37 - $3.50 in my area. It's insane. I have to drive 30 miles to get to a big town, or 1 hour in either direction to get to a city. Even there though, prices are ridiculous. I have better things to spend my money on.

I just wrote an editorial about this on my blog. http://raredream.wordpress.com I don't know how people are supposed to afford it. We have to work to afford gas and groceries, therefore we must drive. In a small town, there is little chance of buses or car pooling since there are not many jobs in the area. At least, that's how it is where I live. Most of the jobs are in surrounding cities and rarely does any live close enough to carpool. Sadly, it seems we're SOL for the moment :(

Yeah, gas prices are just getting on everyone's nerves. I hope they will do something about it pretty soon because I will not pay anything more that $4 for a gallon of gas at all.

At least they are coming down somewhat for now even with the July 4 weekend. It just makes me so mad that they go up and we all complain, nothing gets done and then we just get accustomed to it higher and higher. Even though it hurts.

The other day in Connecticut it was $3.29. I drove to New Jersey to visit my family and actually got excited to see that it was $2.86! It's ridiculous but they know that you'll pay whatever they charge because they know you need it!

LOL!! Gas prices are crazy lately...gas by my house is $3.39 for reg. so $3.09 is looking pretty good from over here! When our government can get control of the oil situation..I think we'll see gas prices go back down!! But you're right...no one is benefitting but the rich people who are in power!!!

Up, up and away. The truism that what goes up must come down just dont hold water with the ever increasing cost of oil. When manoy, can we fill our tanks with water instead of gasoline? They say, there is a possibility that if everything goes about in target and the possibility of a middle east project sabotage can be averted, ten to fifteen years after,we may already see a car running entirely on water-ordinary water, to say the least. So instead of filing up at your local gasoline station, you can fill up your car from your leaking faucet at home.

I understand your frustration. Our gas prices are up to 3.29 and it takes my car $50 just to fill up. I drive 90 miles to and from work each day. So I can go through the gas. We figured up and this increase is costing us just to go to and from work like an extra $100 a month. It is nuts. I heard this morning in Colorado gas is $4.09 a gallon.

They blamed it first on the weather when the hurricanes hit. I see no excuse even being offered anymore.

well if you think $3.09 is bad, I've just looked out of my office window and gas at the station on the intersection is $1.91 per litre but being British we do tend to get very heavily taxed on a lot of our products, yet the money that we pay doesn't seem to go anywhere?

I am so luck to curently be working at home so luckl I save a lot of money on Gas however it scares me that it is getting so high. My husband and I are not making more money so how are we going to afford higher priced gas? I did get a bike and use it to ride to places close by but you can not go every where on a bike. I like that there are more options now but who can afford to just go out and buy a hybrid car. It is defintly a scarey thing.

High gas prices is one of the main reasons that I don't drive now. Sure a car or truck is convenient but MAN! Right now I'll just stick with city transit or carpool...heck I don't go too many places anyway. I'm considering getting another car soon, but just hearing the complaints about the gas prices makes me just want to invest my money elsewhere. Gas prices are a RIP OFF!! - If you're not extra careful you could wind up living in your car. Not good.

I was excited to find gas at $3.18 last week, but where I live its $3.36 and up. Its that time of year, Memorial Day and people driving. It may go down a touch before it goes back up for 4th of July. I commute and I'm desperately trying to find someone to carpool with so we can share the cost. I'd love to find a job closer to home, but I couldn't take much of a paycut, and I'd have to have comparable benefits and that's just hard to come by where I live.

I agree with you on that one, why aren't they doing something about this? Its just ridiculous the prices going up so high, its not good for the community or the nation. I can't stand how high they've gotten, and they are just getting higher and higher. I don't know what we're going to do if it gets any higher, its just crazy. I hope that by some miracle the president steps in to do something, but its not like he has done it before now either.

Gas prices here are running around $3.23 a gallon and that's on the cheap side. I do agree with you that the prices coincide with the time of year and any time that it is more likely that people will travel more, gas prices rise. They say there is a shortage at the refinery level, but I think it's just propaganda and an excuse to soak us for more money.
