Every one suggest to go through the magzines and especially news papers if you ask how to improve english speaking skills. And that to especillay they suggest to watch CNN channel. Is it really helpfull? As gaining grip on a language needs a good practice instead of that just buy watching a channel how can one improve his/her speaking skills?

The first thing you must decide is whether you wish to learn English or American. After 230 years of independence, the two have become very different. Also, when learning a new language, it is best to learn the correct way of using the language, and then learn the 'slang' or colloquial terms. Using tv, films, CDs etc you can learn to understand spoken English, but it is not the same as having a conversation. They do, also, give you an insight into the culture of the UK, or America. Unfortunately, the only way to have a two-way conversation in English, is if you and a fellow student (or more than one) decide to only speak English for a whole evening! All the best with your studies, and if you would like to get some good old films and rasio (from when English was spoken properly) I would recommend the www.retro-media.co.uk website.

Watching news broadcasted in English and reading English magazines don't really help whatsoever. The best way to learn English is to take some sort of class, and to practice speaking English every day. In order to learn a language, the most important thing to do would be to speak it every day, even if it's just a little.

As an English Teacher to Overseas University students, I should stress that conversation is only beneficial if the other person can speak English, too. And correct English, or you'll just pick up bad habits, and their mistakes. Getting the basics right first is most important, and as half a conversation requires listening, such sources as film, radio and news can help with learning this aural technique.

Yes, only watching will not improve English. Practicing is a must. Watch the channel and then practice it with your family members, friends, colleagues.

Well, my English teacher told us about a very good site. http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/ If you are going to speak for example very good English than it is not enough just to watch t.v Everything needs a good practice although reading magazines and watching shows on English may help you.
